Morris County voters, along with other registered voters in the state, passed the proposed constitutional amendment to the Texas constitution,  listed on the ballot as Proposition 1 in the Nov. 4 election.
According to Move Texas Forward, the proposed constitutional amendment will provide billions more in reliable transportation funds, which works out to an estimated $1.7 billion in the first year alone. The $1.7 billion is figured without new taxes, fees or debt.
Its passage authorizes annual disbursements from the state’s oil and gas production tax collections to the State Highway Fund and meets the unmet funding needs for transportation projects in Texas.
According to unofficial election results Nov. 5, Morris County voters gave their consent with 1,636 votes, which were part of 3,101,837 Texan votes that were for Proposition 1.
The proposition calls for the use and dedication of certain money transferred to the state highway fund to assist in the completion of transportation construction, maintenance and rehabilitation projects, not to include toll roads.
The legislation that enabled for this constitutional amendment (SJR1) was approved during the 83rd Legislature, third called season last year.
However, passage of the proposition is only the first step.
