Do you remember the days when customer service was king? If you were born before 1960 you may even remember when gas stations used to have someone that came out to pump your gas, check the oil and wash the windshield. But those days are long gone. Now its automated phone systems that take you through 14 different menus before you might actually get to speak to a human being. And I always enjoy the opportunity to participate in a survey asking me how they did after a customer service encounter. Oh yeah baby!! That’s when the famous line “Your call may be monitored or recorded for quality assurance purposes” comes back to haunt them. I sure miss the old days when store owners had employees that knew something about the department they were working in. Every time I go to a certain sporting goods store in Longview I always end up helping someone at the gun counter by answering a question about a product that they wanted information on. Now while I don’t work for that store, I still enjoy helping folks who have not gotten what they needed from the paid employees. Now days it’s fairly common to encounter someone working in a retail establishment that doesn’t have a clue and really doesn’t want the hassle of waiting on customers. But that’s not to say that customer service is totally gone.
