Centershot Ministries, based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, is a ministry which teaches students the basics of archery, and uses that as an outreach to help churches reach their communities. One man, Jonathon Nix, or “Big Red”, as he is known, has brought this ministry to the Daingerfield area.
“I got interested in archery in 2006 and began bow fishing,” Mr. Nix said. “I started at the pro shop in New Diana and worked there from 2010 to 2012, and that is when I fell in with archery and teaching kids the trade of archery,” he said. Nix stated that he and the leaders want the kids to know that they car for them. “They need love,” stated Jennifer Nix, his wife.
On Feb. 10, Mr. Nix started his third round of Centershot classes. Using the Family Life Center at South Union Baptist Church, Mr. Nix sets up an indoor archery range that is both safe and functional. In the first class meeting, Mr. Nix and his team of 10 to 12 adults begin by teaching safety rules and basic techniques. All students are tested for their particular draw length, which is the length that they will pull the bow string back, as well as learning what eye is their dominant eye. They then go into shooting techniques.
