Local dog shelter needs help

By Marlene Bohr
Those of us who have dogs can relate to other dog owners’ fear when they hear a thunderstorm come into the area. I know Easter Sunday morning mine became attached to me and no matter where in the house I went, she tagged along. I could see the fear in her eyes and no amount of telling her it was okay seemed to appease her when she’d hear the next crack of thunder.
I can only imagine what the dogs at the Daingerfield Animal Shelter felt like when the wind hit and the roof was torn off and their cages came down. It was amazing none of them were hurt, other than their feelings. No one would take kindly to their shelter being totally blown down around them.
Animal Control Officer Casey Hicks told me when he and Tabitha Green got to the shelter, the dogs were lined up against the fence and were very happy to see them.
With the help of other firemen, some of the cages were assembled with the pieces that weren’t damaged and a few of the dogs had their ‘home’ again, minus the roof. Other dogs were waiting in cages for someone to pick them up to foster them for a few days. By mid afternoon, some order was restored, but it looked like a tremendous job ahead. Things were tossed around, the roof was lying across the fence, and it was just one thing after another. The roof looked twisted totally beyond repair.
Early reports on Facebook asked for people to help. With this setback, the animals at the shelter certainly need all our help. If you find you can pick up an extra bag of dog food or treats, the workers at City Hall would be grateful to receive them.
Any monetary funds to help the shelter are surely needed. I have heard of school children bringing pennies to school to help causes; maybe our children can get involved in this effort also. Perhaps there are youth groups that can hold fund-raisers and help.
You can call the Daingerfield City Hall at 903-645-9309 and ask what you can do to help the animals. If you are thinking of adopting a dog, this would be a good time to do so. They have already had a good scare and their present home destroyed around them; to be adopted into a new home would be just the best thing ever.
