The celebrations have not ended for the 2016 State Champion Avinger Indians. The “Magnificent Seven,” as they have become known across the state, were honored at multiple events on March 17.
The community was invited to the school at 2:40 to meet and congratulate the team on their accomplishments, and they packed the gymnasium. Assistant Coach Lane Loyd, who also serves as the Avinger High School principal, said, “One of the most amazing things is that we were able to accomplish this feat without being able to run a full practice. We never could practice against a full five, because we only had seven guys.”
Coach Treston Dowell, who was a member of the 1996 championship team, was asked to explain the difference between winning the championship as a player, and to win again as a coach, 20 years later. Dowell said, “In ’96, it was kind of a selfish feeling, it was all about me and my teammates and what we had accomplished. This one is all about them, the players. I was so excited for them and their accomplishments. I am just so proud of these seven guys.”
Cass County Judge Becky Wilbanks was in attendance, and read a proclamation from the Cass County Commissioner’s Court, recognizing the players and their accomplishments.
Another rally was held later that evening, to give everyone who had been working during the earlier rallya chance to come show their support
