Third annual art show includes photography

The Legacy Event Center held their Third Annual Art Show over the weekend. Local and artists brought their works to be judged in categories including still life, animals, portrait, landscape, floral and more.

This year offered a new genre for competition in photography. The division were Adult, Youth-Junior High, and Youth-High School. Judging the photography portion was Cassi Clower, who earned her Bachelor’s degree from Texas Women’s University in 2011. She has taken numerous photography classes, and enjoys traveling the country, capturing nature through her lens.

In the Junior High Division, Mally Crawley’s “Peach Bud” placed third, and “Cows Up Close and Personal,” by Cambree Kerr, placed second. Zoe Scott won the Junior High division with “Dragon Lizards.” In the High School division, “Rose One,” by Laurel Kirby took third place. Ricardo Mancias’ “The Harbor II” placed second, while “Little Bird,” by Justin Scott, placed first. The Youth division winners received $15 for first place, $10 for second, and $5 for third.

The adult division had more categories: Creative Composition, Animal, Black and White, Portrait, Floral, and Landscape. Adult winners received $50 for first place per division, $30 for second, and $20 for third. In the Creative Composition category, “She’s a Keeper,” by Prouty Photography, placed second, behind Patricia Trulock’s “Bronze Pot.” Ducks were the common theme in the Animals category, with Ducks in a Row” by Toni Walker and “Ducks” by Brinda Mandella placing first and second, respectively. Mandells’s photograph entitled “Animals” also contained ducks, and place third.

Renae Grant placed first in the Black and White category, with her entry entitled “Rooni.” “Lacey,” by Jeannie Wall placed third in the adult Portrait category, and Shana Carter’s “The Tween Years” placed second. “Golden Reflections,” by Prouty Photography, took first in that category.

Third place in the adult Floral category went to “Hibiscus,” by Toni Walker, and Brinda Mandella placed second with her photograph entitled “Rose.” Patricia Trulock’s “Pink” topped the Floral division. In the Landscape portion of the Adult competition, Trulock’s “Barn” placed third, just behind Nancy Windle’s “Mesa Arch,” in second, and Bill Windle’s “Hot Springs Lake,” which was chosen for first.

The Youth Best of Show in the Photography competition went to Hector Galvan, for his piece entitled “Bubbly Candy.” Galvan won a $50 prize for his artwork. The Adult Best of Show photograph belonged to Nancy Windle, whose photograph of “Antelope Canyon” received a $200 prize. Of the Best of Show winners, Clower said, “ In the selection of the “Best of Show” photos, I look for a photograph that not only captures my attention and stands out among the rest, but on that also has great focus, an overall range of creativity, and good composition.”

In the Elementary Art show, third place went to “Pattern Pup,” by Natalie Ney. Sierra Smith’s “Watercolor Fish” placed second, and Mia Girate’s “Wild Flowers.” Chase Crow’s “Chomp Chomp” placed third in the Junior High division. Gillian Knowles placed second with “Watercolor Chair.” Aubree Harps piece, “Sunflower,” placed first in the Junior High Division. Gloria Dubose’s “My Lady Phoenix Dreams,” received third place in the High School category, while Roberto Netro’s “Self Portrait” placed second. Chandler Hall placed first with his entry, “Two-Sided.”

In the adult 3D/Woodworking category, Francis Bartley, Junior won third place with his “Celtic Test of Time.” Dale Poole’s Mesquite Duck” placed second, and Ronald Engel-Wilson’s Honey Locust Fruit Bowl” took first place. In the Abstract/Contemporary division, Carla Myane placed third with “Out on a Limb.” Anoa Kenyatta placed second with “Turquoise,” and “Angel Wings,” by Zona Farris, placed first.

Terri deNatale took second and third with her Animal entries, “Steven’s Farm Chickens” and “Seagull,” respectively. Barbara Brown’s “Resting Our Ride” received the first place award in the Animal category. The Adult Floral Art category saw Mary McKay place third with “Queen of Hearts.” Carla Myane placed second with “Undercover,” and “White Flowers,” by Ruby Gildon, placed first.

Carol Hale Bybee placed third in Still Life with “Flowering Leaves,” and Pat Sprague placed second with “Country Peach.” Carol Flori placed first in Still Life with High Summer. In the Landscape division, Terri deNatale placed first and third, with “Driftwood-S” and “Highlights,” respectively. Carla Myane placed second in Landscape with “Blurred Lines.” The Portrait category saw “Steady,” by deNatale, place third, while Danny Helms placed second with “Handwriting on the Wall.” Ruby Gildon’s “Time to Saddle Up” took first in the category.

Art show Judge Kim Wommack earned her Associates of Arts degree from Tyler Junior College in 1974. Since then, she has since earned her Bachelor of Science in Communication Arts, a Master of Science with a focus in Art, and a Doctorate of Education in Supervision, Curriculum, and Instruction-Higher Education, all from Texas A&M-Commerce. For Best of Show, Wommack said,” In the selection process for a “Best of Show” piece, I look for a piece of art that grabs my attention. I look for pieces the have good composition, and appropriate range of values, a masterful use of techniques, and a high quality presentation. “Physco Squad,” by Samantha Knowles, was best in show for the Youth divisions. Danny Helms’ entry, “View from Rich Mountain,” was Best in Show for the adults.
