Doris Cupp Guinn, 88, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend, peacefully went to be with her Lord and Savior Monday, May 6, at her home in Daingerfield while surrounded by family.  Services will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, at South Union Baptist Church with the Revs. Chad Thompson and Dr. Neal Clark officiating.

Mrs. Guinn and her twin sister, Dorothy, were born to James A. and Era Lee McTyre Lester on May 13, 1924, in Daingerfield.  She grew up the youngest of seven children on the family’s farm in Morris County during the Great Depression.  She spent the majority of her life in her hometown of Daingerfield and attended the Daingerfield schools; how-ever, her family moved to Louisiana for a short time where she graduated from Rodessa High School.

She married Sam W. Cupp on July 3. 1948, after he returned from serving in the U.S. Army in the European Campaign of World War II. The couple was blessed with two daughters, Sandra Kay and Judy Ann.  They were the light of her life, as were her grandchildren and great grandchildren in later years.

Mrs.Guinn became a widow after a 20-year marriage.  Undaunted and determined to provide a future for her daughters, she became an entrepreneur ahead of her time by buying and operating a small, successful grocery on Webb Street—Twins’ Drive-In.

Later, she also worked at Knieff’s in Daingerfield where she made many life-long friends.  As a single parent, she made it possible for her daughters to further their education.  In 1975 Doris married Orville Guinn.  After being happily married for five years, she was once again widowed.  She kept each of her four grandchildren before they started to school while her daughters taught school.  Her grandchildren have wonderful memories of their preschool days with Gigi.

Mrs. Guinn was never idle.  She enjoyed good times with family and had a passion for gardening, crocheting, cooking, and yard work.  Most importantly, she loved the Lord and her church, South Union Baptist, where she was a member for many years, serving as a children’s teacher, choir member, part of the Naomi Sunday School class, and the Ladies Auxiliary.  She was very faithful in attendance until she fell ill five months ago.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, two brothers, five sisters, and grandson, Lance Pilgrim.

She is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law; Sandra and Dearl Quarles and Judy and Randy Pilgrim of Daingerfield; two stepsons, Paul and Patti Guinn of Daingerfield, Rusty and Sheila Guinn of Jonesborough, Ark.; grandchildren, Amber Quarles of Houston, Sammye Phillips of Daingerfield, Lindsey Pilgrim of Austin, Daniel Pilgrim of Daingerfield; three great-grandchildren,; numerous nieces, nephews, and friends; and her special little Princess.

Her smile, encouragement, Christian witness, and wisdom will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.
