Varsity Lady Tigers win second consecutive track district championship

The Daingerfield High School Varsity girls participated in the District 16-3A Track Meet Thursday, April 14, at Pewitt High School. The Lady Tigers were crowned District Champions for the second year in a row. In the long jump, Denver Mims placed first, while Unique Walker placed third in the high jump. Layla Johnston placed third in pole vault, followed by Ivy Banks in sixth. Meme Black placed third in shot put, and first in discus, while Denibria Hall placed sixth in discus.

The 400 meter relay team of Chablis Barber, Denver Mims, Alexis Porter, and Layla Johnston placed first, as did the 800 meter relay team of Kahleyia Johnson, Porter, Mims, and Barber. The 1600m relay team, consisting of Johnston, Johnson, Alexius Williams, and Porter also placed first, giving the Lady Tigers a sweep of the three relay events.

Jakayla Neal placed fourth in the 800 meter run, while Madison Cox placed seventh in the 1600 meter run, and Yesenia Bravo placed seventh in the 3200 meter run.

Nekoda Coleman placed second in the 100 meter hurdles, followed by Banks in third. The 300 meter Hurdles saw Jakia Neal placed seventh, followed by Banks in eighth. The Lady Tigers took the top two places in the 100 meter dash, with Barber and Walker finishing first and second. Johnston won the 400 meter dash, while Mims finished first in the 200 meter dash.

Also participating for the Lady Tigers were Amber Douglas, Claire Smith, Lemerica Alexander, Elasia Alexander, Jazmin Solis, Skylar Williams, Courtney Makepeace, McKenzie Scott, Gekayla Alexander, Monorra Sok, Tamerra Jackson and My’Asha Buford.

According to Coach Dana Carter, the Lady Tigers qualified in 13 events for Area, which will be held Friday, April 22, at Pewitt High School. The Lady Tigers also won the Area title, scoring 128 total points. The next closest team to the Lady Tigers was DeKalb, who put up 61 points. Daingerfield had nine athletes qualify in 11 eleven events for the Regional meet, which will be held April 29 and 30 in Whitehouse.

At the Area meet, Chablis Barber set a school record in the 100 meter dash, turning in a time of 11.96 seconds to take first place. Barber also qualified for Regionals in the 400 meter and 800 meter relays. Denver Mims advanced to the Redgional meet in the 200 meter dash, the 400 and 800 meter relays, and the long jump. Layla Johnston will join them on the 400 meter relay, and also qualified in the 400 emter dash and the 1600 meter relay. Alexis Porter will run at Regionals in the 400, 800, and 1600 meter relays. Kahleyia Johnson will run the 400 meter relay, and Johnson and Alexius Williams will be will be rounding out the 1600 minute relay.

Unique Walker will attend the Regional meet, having advanced in the high jump and the 100 meter dash. Meme Black qualified for the Regional meet in the shot put and discus, and Nekoda Coleman will be competing in the 100 meter hurdles.
