A local Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities teacher organized a field day for area PPCD students. Ms. Karen Rawlins, from Hughes Springs, organized the first PPCD Field Day, in which seven schools participated.

Rawlins said the idea stemmed from Special Olympics. “To participate in Special Olympics, students must be at least six years old,” said Rawlins, who added, “They said we were welcome to come and watch. Well, watching is not one of our strong points.”

PPCD students range in age from three to five, and includes students of varying disabilities. These disabilities can range in severity from speech delays to multiple disabilities. PPCD students and teachers from Atlanta, Queen City, Pittsburg, Pewitt, Linden-Kildare, and Daingerfield joined Hughes Springs for this inaugural event. The students participated in Special Olympic style events, including a run for each age. Students received ribbons for each event. There were also several other activities, as well, including bubbles, balls, and face painting.

Students also had the opportunity to play in a bounce house, and dance the Chicken Dance and the Cha Cha Slide with members of the Hughes Springs Elementary Student Council. Members of the student Council assisted with the different activities, served as cheerleaders during the racing, and passed out cookies to those students in attendance.

“The kids have really seemed to enjoy it, and this is definitely something we will try to do again,” said Rawlins, as she thanked Dewey Moore, who donated the medals and ribbons for the students, and Subway in Hughes Springs, who donated lunches.
