From My Perspective- We sure could use a little good news today

It seems like every time I turn around, there is another news story of someone getting killed, either for beliefs, the color of their skin, or the uniform they wear. And you know what I think? I think it is ridiculous. From my perspective, all the hatred in the world today is absolutely absurd!

I look at the five police officers in Dallas, who were killed doing their job. None of the five, I would imagine, thought they would not make it home that evening. None of them had any idea that their family would never see them alive again. And for what? Simply because they were cops. They were not the cops who had shot and killed someone earlier in the week. Yet five men were killed doing their jobs, simply because they were cops.
This article is not only about police officers killed in the line of duty. The two men who had been killed by police prior to the Dallas shooting did not have to die. I am not saying the police targeted them, or that they were killed simply because of the color of their skin, (although I am not so naive to believe that does not still happen). What I am saying is this: those men made a choice. Whether they intended to harm police or not, they made a choice to give law enforcement a reason to believe they would.
The hate in this world is not only about cops versus blacks, or white versus black, or Muslim versus Christians. This is going on all over the world. It seems that at least once a week there is a terrorist attack somewhere. Somewhere, people are being killed, simply for being different than their killer. Why? What has happened in the world that has made us all so hateful and intolerant of others? I wish I had an answer to that.
What I do have is an idea. What if, instead of looking at someone who is different with hate in our eyes, we actually saw them as one of us? What if we looked past the skin color, or the uniform, and saw the HUMAN instead? What if, instead of jumping to conclusions and yelling hate speech at those who are different, we actually listen? You never know, you may just have more in common with them than you realize.
When I was growing up, there was an old country song that seems to fit our world today. Anne Murray sang, in part, “Nobody fired a shot in anger, nobody had to die in vain. We sure could use a little good news today.” Here is my suggestion: BE the good news. Work to be part of the solution, instead of adding to the problem. Then, maybe we can focus on a little good news.
