A New Year is a good time to remember school bus safety

As children around the area have gone back to school, there will once again be buses on the road, transporting our communities most precious cargo. The New Year is a good time to remind drivers of the importance of heeding the laws with regards to school buses.

Most buses today are equipped with a stop sign that extends out from the driver’s side when the bus stops and the doors open. This sign, along with the traditional red and/or yellow flashing lights, serve as reminders that there will be children exiting the bus. In years prior, cell phones were a cause for distraction when driving in general. With the passage of the texting and driving ban that went into effect Sept. 1, 2017, drivers have even less reasons to be distracted when approaching a school bus. But the biggest reason to pay attention is the children who are exiting the bus.
