David Beard, ‘The Catfish King,’ dead at 82
By TONI WALKER
David Beard was a self-made man who was proud of family, friends and employees who helped him achieve his success. Originally from Hughes Springs, Beard passed away June 22 after a lengthy illness. He
was 82.
Beard walked away from high school at the age of 14 because his parents couldn’t afford to buy him shoes. From those humble beginnings, Beard made a name for himself as founder, president, and CEO of Great American Foods. Beard stayed true to the lessons his mother taught him as a child, using those early instructions on cleanliness, pride, and hard work as the basis for the success of his business.
