Acting upon a request from the citizens of Lone Star, the Daingerfield-Lone Star Independent School District board approved donating the playground equipment from the now-closed Lone Star Elementary School to the city of Lone Star. Sandy Duke of Lone Star requested the donation on behalf of the city.
“I want to thank you for allowing me to come and speak,” Mrs. Duke said. “I learned at one of our chamber of commerce meetings that at Lone Star Elementary you are planning on auctioning off things at the school. Apparently one of the questions came up about the elementary playground equipment. Over a period of years, my mom has purchased things and there have been various donations made to the school. The school has been closed for some time. Now that this has come about, we thought perhaps the school could help the city of Lone Star.
“We are lacking in our equipment at the city park and would appreciate if you would consider donating all of the playground equipment to the park. I don’t know what all is being auctioned off, but I would appreciate your help.”
Lone Star Mayor Karl Stoermer agreed.
“I would just say that the equipment is there and not being used,” Mayor Stoermer said. “We know that childhood obesity is one of the problems in the nation, and the more we can get these kids active, the better. We have a facility where the kids can use that equipment.”
The approval was granted to transfer the equipment to the city, contingent upon checking with the school attorney.
Ted Estep, architect for the school bond, addressed the board, giving an update on the construction at the junior high school and the high school. The construction is covered under a $5.4 million bond that is a Qualified School Construction Bond that voters approved at the polls last year.
