All Region Band

Bre’anna Clevinger, left, a seventh grader at Hughes Springs Junior High School and a baritone player, made eighth chair when auditioning for the All-Region Band in November. Justan Campbell, eighth grader and trumpet player, made 11th chair. They traveled to Gladewater Jan. 25 and 26 to rehearse and perform a concert in the All-Region Band. They learned more than four pieces of music in two days to perform the concert.

Russell receives honors

Ryan Russell, an occupational health and safety major, was honored at Southeastern Oklahoma State University’s Freshman Success Reception.
He was named on the dean’s honor roll, and he was also named on the athletic director’s honor roll at Southeastern Oklahoma State University.  Russell is an offensive lineman on the Savage Storm football team.
A 2012 graduate of Hughes Springs High School, he is the son of Rodney and Sherry Russell.

DECA Competitors

Hughes Springs High School DECA members competed at DECA District Career Development Conference at the Region VIII Educational Service Center on Jan. 23. Participating, from left, were Jade VanHuss, Kassity Connor, Michelle Terry, Melissa Skaggs, Caiti Camp, Jessica Modisette, Sheyenne Baker, Anna Applin, Breanne Gunn, John Willis, Michael Harris, Cody Williams, BJ Fickling, Laura Stewart, Caitlin Moreland, Taylor Wallace, Brady Edmiston, Nicole Willis, Halie Pippin, Stone Anderson, Shane Finney, Eric Montgomery, Brandon Martin, Jeffrey Woodyard, Abraham Pina, Sabranna Sloan, and Dylan Fitzgerald. Gage Bridwell is also a member.

Off to State

Hughes Springs Mustangs Austin Sandefur and Christa Hargett participated in the Region IV UIL High School Solo & Ensemble competition held on Feb. 9 at Marshall High School.  Each received a rating of 1 on their solo, which is the highest rating that can be received at the competition.  Both will compete at the State competition in May.

Girls’ Powerlifting

Lady Tigers brought home trophies from the Emory Rains meet Feb. 2. Nicole Phillips won first place in her weight division. Second place lifters were TaChrissa Boyd and Chasity Davis, while Adrianna Hill took third. Shametriece Black was a fifth place finisher, and seventh place in their respective weight divisions went to Devin Camp, Sha’Kia Williams and Makayla Hatten. Chablis Barber won 10th.

State Competitors

Shunterika Linwood, Jassica McMillon, Raphael Velasquez, and Kimberly Brown, with the Daingerfield Business Professionals of America, are State qualifiers of Economic Research Project Team. They qualified at the BPA State Leadership Conference and will compete in Houston Feb. 28 through March 2.

Clinic owners desire to locate in Daingerfield

Recognizing the need for additional medical care in Morris County, the Morris County Commissioners approved a letter of support for WellnessPointe Family Health. Members of the clinic addressed the commissioners at their Feb. 11 meeting to inform them of the health need in the community and of plans to apply for a federal grant.
Carl Walters, chief executive officer of WellnessPointe, said there were four or five things they wanted to accomplish.

Chamber banquets are Saturday

Avinger

The seventh annual Avinger Area Chamber of Commerce awards banquet will be held on Saturday at 6 p.m. in the McDaniel Building of the Avinger School. “A Polynesian Evening Out” is the theme.
The speaker for the event will be Kathy Patrick from Beauty and the Book in Jefferson. Entertainment will be provided by Amy Haid, East Texas artist and entertainer from Winnsboro.
Among the awards to be presented is the Citizen of the Year award. The Avinger Volunteer Fire Department will be honored at the banquet.
Advance tickets are on sale and will be available at the Avinger First State Bank and from members of the chamber. Tickets will also be available at the door.
