Residents in Hughes Springs will once again have a local location to purchase groceries and necessities. Brookshire’s Spring Market will open on Aug. 8.

For roughly six months the last two years, Hughes Springs residents had a local option while the Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market was open across from the Hughes Springs ISD Administration building. That store closed, along with similar stores in Lone Star, Naples, Diana, and surrounding area, by the retail giant.

How to help and support schools

Good schools help to harbor a strong sense of community. Children often make their first friends at school, and parents often meet their neighbors through schoolsponsored activities.

Students and school districts face a new set of challenges each year. Many of them can be remedied or made less daunting with the help of volunteers. Here are some of the many ways men and women can support the schools in their communities:

Hughes Springs VFD makes it rain at the library

Fluffy white foam, a giant water hose, and blessings from all the grown-ups to play in it…what more could a kid ask for on a muggy summer morning? Hughes Springs Area Library and the Hughes Springs Volunteer Fire Department teamed up for a smashing success July 28, when Fire Chief Jay Cates brought trucks and firefighters to the library for the final library event of the summer.

First, there was an informal briefing session with the children. “When do you call 9-1-1?” Chief Cates asked. Kids shouted out their answers: “When your house is on fire!” “When you smell smoke!” “When you get in a car wreck!” Chief Cates: “Right. And, do you call 9-1-1 if your brother is being mean to you?” “Noooooo!” came the enthusiastic response. Kids were also given the opportunity to see and feel the heavy axes, sledgehammers and pry-bars that firefighters must use when breaking through a door or a roof.

On any given evening, people are swarming both the Daingerfield City Park and Spring Park in downtown Hughes Springs. Now, there is no cause for alarm, as those hitting the parks are not doing any harm. Many of them are taking part in the newest gaming craze, known as Pokémon Go.

Americans have been fascinated with Pokémon since their introduction in 1998. They were originally introduced in Japan following their creation by Satoshi Tajiri in 1996. The Pokémon craze has included numerous video games, anime television series, movies, and trading card games. The most recent addition to the craze is Pokémon Go.

With a little planning, your family can get the most out of your school shopping budget - - by taking advantage of sales, comparison shopping, buying in bulk and simply by making sure you don’t buy things you already own.

Here are some smart ways families can reduce costs as students head back to class this fall.

Nonprofit partners with local pharmacies to prevent prescription drug abuse

Brookshire Grocery Company pharmacies have teamed up with local nonprofit, Next Step Community Solutions, to provide information to patients about the dangers of prescription drug abuse and how to properly dispose of unwanted prescriptions.

“We are so excited about this partnership and Brookshire Grocery Company’s enthusiasm for helping the community,” said Rebecca Smith, coalition coordinator for Next Step. “Many people don’t realize how dangerous it can be to keep unused prescriptions in their home. Getting this information out there will mean fewer chances for prescriptions to be abused and create addiction.”
