Valdez wins race to face Abbott in November gubernatorial election

By ED STERLING,

AUSTIN — Former Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez defeated Houston businessman Andrew White, the son of the late former governor, Mark White, in the May 22 Texas Democratic Party primary runoff. Valdez, the first Latina to win a gubernatorial primary in Texas, will run against incumbent Republican Governor Greg Abbott, who is seeking a second four-year term, in the November 6 general election.

Valdez garnered 230,467 votes, or 53.32 percent of the total vote, to White’s 201,713 votes, which came to 46.67 percent. Historically, this was the lowest recorded turnout for a Texas Democratic Party gubernatorial runoff. Only 2.83 percent of the state’s 15,249,541 registered voters cast a ballot. Notably, two incumbent state legislators were defeated in the runoffs

These school shootings must be stopped

By JIM SNYDER

Sadly, we are dealing with yet another school shooting, this time in Texas. And, just like clockwork, the hand wringing and lip service by the media and the democrat talking heads has begun. Naturally they are blaming everything on Republicans and the NRA for the violence.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am fighting mad at what has been going on in our schools. But I am also angry at how most of the media simply knows very little to nothing about the things they are talking about. Of course, the reason for that is simple: the facts do not support their anti gun narrative. They will only report what helps them push their agenda. How many of you heard about the school resource officer in Illinois last week who engaged a school shooter and stopped him before he could harm others? Yeah, that’s right you didn’t hear about it did you?

by ED STERLING

AUSTIN — Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton last week asked two federal agencies to move quickly to fund the state’s Healthy Texas Women program.

Stephen Willeford

by ELLIS KNOX

At the 2018 NRA Convention I attended on the weekend of May 4 and 5, before Vice-President Mike Pence and President Donald Trump (both of whom are NRA members) came out to speak, the NRA honored another NRA member Stephen Willeford.

Mr. Willeford is the NRA instructor who engaged and shot the mass killer in the Sutherland Springs First Baptist Church shooting. Willeford heard the gun shots in his home and realized it was coming from the Baptist Church. The killer was shooting people like fish in a barrel, leaving 26 dead and 20 wounded amid the blood-soaked pews.

Strong Women

By TONI WALKER

With Mother’s Day approaching, I have had some friends who are weighing on my heart. It has also got me thinking about what really makes the world go round.

There is a picture that goes around on Facebook periodically that reads “Strong Women; May we be them, may we know them, may we raise them.” As the mother of two girls, I can tell you that one of my greatest goals in life is that my girls will grow up to be strong, independent women who would be able to take care of themselves on their own if the need arise. More than that, though, I want to raise my girls to be strong in their faith, and strong in the belief of themselves. One of the greatest things that my mom and dad did for me was to teach me to believe in myself.

Abbott urges local officials to apply for Harvey funds

By ED STERLING

AUSTIN — Mayors, county judges and emergency management officials in communities impacted by Hurricane Harvey received letters last week from Gov. Greg Abbott, urging them to take advantage of available funding.

Some $500 million in funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program are available now, Abbott said. These funds are in addition to the more than $10 billion in Community Development Block Grant funds approved by Congress and awarded to Texas earlier this year.
