Lone Star City Council hires treatment plant operator

After a 90-minute executive session with interviews, the Lone Star City Council went back in session and approved hiring Shane Clapper as the wastewater treatment plant operator.

Morris County Jail Log

The following persons were booked into the Morris County Jail in March:

 Jeffery Hurd, 27, Burleson, possession of controlled substance, criminal trespass, and motion to revoke criminal mischief.

Darla Simpson, 30, Avinger, possession of a controlled substance.

Anna Salazar, 25, Lone Star, failure to appear on failure to report address change and speeding in a school zone.

Robert Lewis, 24, Naples, delivery of cocaine.

Fire guts residence

This fire was at the residence of Wally Wright, on Everett Drive off County Road 3112 west of Daingerfield. It was called in at about 3:19 p.m. on April 9. At this time the fire is believed to be accidental, according to a sheriff’s department official. Daingerfield Volunteer Fire Department responded to the original blaze and twice more when it rekindled.

Several trees fell on property of Daingerfield Mayor Lou Irvin.

Storms on Easter Sunday brought down many trees in the area. Residents of Tanglewood Addition in Daingerfield had many downed trees to cope with after the storm blew through. No tornadoes were reported, only straight line winds.

Cass County Genealogical Society

Cass County Genealogical Society to meet

 

The Cass County Genealogical Society will meet at their new location in the Queen City Methodist Church Family Life Center at 6:30 p.m. on April 9.  The church is located one block south of the Main Street (Highway 74) through downtown Queen City.
 The guest speaker will be Ashley Miles Denson, the granddaughter of Robert "Chick" Miles, who was the last owner of Miles Drugs Store in Atlanta.  She will share information about the drug store as well as information on the Miles Family, who were early settlers in the Atlanta-Queen City area.

Stormy weather

An Easter morning storm with straight line winds raced through the area, leaving the Daingerfield Animal Shelter without a roof and blowing down all the cages, according to Casey Hicks, animal control officer. A few of the cages were back up by Sunday afternoon. No dogs were injured during the storm.

Daingerfield academic students capture awards at State meet

Students, who have consistently gone to the top in junior high school, now have tackled their first State meet in San Antonio bringing home several individual wins and team wins for Daingerfield High School. The 10 students who attended the meet were Cross Allen, Karter Ford, Maribel Ortiz, Anjelica Reyes, Nataeja Epps, Cassidy Shaver, Courtney Davis, Sam Fowler, Lazariuz Luster, and Cedarion Hopkins. The Texas Math and Science Coaches Association State meet was held at the University of Texas at San Antonio on March 16.
The entire team placed third in Overall Class 2A. The calculator team brought home the first place calculator team plaque. Members of the calculator team are Cassidy, Sam, Karter, and Cross.
The number sense team placed third bringing home a third place plaque. The number sense team consists of Cassidy, Cedarion, and Karter.

Three arrested on drug charges

 Three area men were arrested in Morris County March 24 for possession of controlled substance charges, according to Morris County Sheriff Jack Martin.
“Deputy Hershel Stroman was patrolling in the area of County Road 2115 when he observed a maroon Ford Expedition’s driver commit a minor traffic violation,” Sheriff Martin said. “Deputy Stroman conducted a traffic stop and identified the driver as Steven Andrew Hendrickson, 27, of Hughes Springs, and the passenger as Bryan Ross Scarborough, 32, of Daingerfield.
“Deputy Stroman obtained consent to search the vehicle and located suspected methamphetamines. Both men were placed under arrest for possession of a controlled substance, Penalty Group One, more than 1 gram, less than 4 grams. The possession charge is a felony of the third degree, punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine not to exceed $10,000.”
