Concert
Fellowship Baptist Church in Daingerfield will be hosting the musical group “Redeemed” in concert on June 30 at 6 p.m. Everyone is invited.
Usher Day
The Pine Bluff Baptist Church on Highway 250 will observe Usher Day on July 14 at 2:30 p.m. The Rev. W.R. Collins and the Floyd Valley Baptist Church of Marietta will be the special guests. The public is invited.

Cass County Grand Jury Report

During a one day Grand Jury Session on May 3, Cass County Criminal District Attorney Clint E. Allen states that 55 new indictments were handed down. Below are the names and offenses of those individuals who were indicted and have been arrested:

William Taylor Duncan Jr., 44, Jefferson, delivery of a controlled substance.
Simon Louis Young, 29, Queen City, theft of copper wire.

Area gears up for Fourth of July festivities

The Avinger Area Chamber of Commerce will host a "Picnic in the Park" in the Avinger Community Park on July 4. Starting at 7 p.m. there will be hot dogs with all the fixings served and snow cones for dessert. Entertainment at 8 p.m. will be provided by the Serendipity Singers.

Missionaries live undercover for the Lord

Undercover police is a well known fact in our lives and on television, and history tells us stories of the Underground Railroads that existed around the Civil War days; however, this story is about undercover missionaries. Born and raised in Hughes Springs, Justin Smith met Candi at college. While at college, the two read about missionaries who work in China and decided that was how they would do their part in spreading God’s salvation message.

School board denies 3 percent administrator pay increase

By Marlene J. Bohr mbohr@steelcountrybee.com An agenda item to approve administrator and diagnostician raises for Daingerfield-Lone Star Independent School District did not pass by a vote of 3 to 4. This action was taken at the June 17 board meeting. The 3 percent increase would mean an additional $26,000 plus in expenses to the district. Board member Miguel Larsen said he was abstaining as he did not have all of the information needed and wanted to have time to look at the budget again. Jerri Chism is back on Lone Star City Council

By Marlene J. Bohr mbohr@steelcountrybee.com In spite of citizen’s comments to the contrary, Jerri Chism was appointed by the Lone Star City Council to fill the seat vacated by Karl Stoermer, who won the mayor spot in the last election. The decision was made at the June 20 city council meeting.

Commissioners drop voting boxes to four for special elections

The Morris County Commissioners unanimously voted to reduce the number of voting boxes in all amendment and special elections to one voting box per precinct. The decision was made at the June 17 meeting of the commissioners.

College president's contract extended

Northeast Texas Community College President Dr. Brad Johnson’s contract was extended another year when the board of trustees met May 26. His contract now runs through 2017.

In other business, Troy White was approved to take the admissions coordinator position, which is a promotion. Hires include Erika Garza as special populations advisor; Dr. Drew Murphy as faculty member in chemistry; and Joe Whinery as faculty member in sustainable agriculture.

Teresa Wooten was released from her employment contract at her request to take a position at another firm.
