Matching donation

Mack and Nelda Taylor of Mount Pleasant, left, presented a $500 donation to the Campaign for the Whatley Center for the Performing Arts. Receiving the gift on behalf of the Northeast Texas Community College Foundation are Nita May, NTCC director of development, and Dr. Jonathan McCullough, NTCC vice president for advancement. Avinger fire fighter attends media class

Over 1,900 firefighters attended the 84th Annual Municipal Fire School at Texas A&M University during the week of July 21. The fire training school is conducted by the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Agency (TEEX). Participants included representatives of municipal and volunteer fire departments across the United States and foreign countries. Courses taught encompassed training in various levels of firefighter, fire prevention, fire investigation, rescue, and specialty courses.

Hometown Person

Full name: Linda Diane Nunley Martin.
I have lived in: Hughes Springs for 39 years.
Family:  Husband, Terry Martin; son, Don Allen Munden; and daughter, Barbara Munden.
Pets:  I have two dogs, LJ and Marley.  They are my babies.
Occupation: I am the food service director at Daingerfield-Lone Star ISD.
One of the best things about my job is: To see the students when they begin high school and watch how they change during the years before they graduate.
My ideal vacation is: To go to Yellowstone National Park.
My heroes are: My parents because they were always there for me no matter what. They taught me to always be true to myself, to finish any job I started, and always treat people fairly.
My favorite TV show is: Law and Order.
My favorite healthy snack is: Trail Mix.
A cause I most believe in is:  To Trust in God and the 2nd Amendment.

Sandwich Supper
Jenkins Community and Volunteer Fire Department will host a sandwich supper at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17.

Movies in the Park
Movies in the Park are held at dusk at Spring Creek Park in Hughes Springs. “Over the Hedge” will show Aug. 9 and “Thunderstruck” on Aug. 10. Showing on Aug. 23 will be “Joyful Noise” and on Aug. 24 will be “Paulie.”  For questions, call 903-639-7519 or 903-639-2351.

Mustangs tickets
Hughes Springs Mustang Football reserved seating tickets are available in the Hughes Springs high school office.  Reserved seating tickets for the season include tickets for five home games and in addition, a ticket for the game scheduled at Lobo Stadium in Longview.

Olivia Rogers had a third place finish in the 13 and under riding division at the American Paint Horse Association World Show in Fort Worth.
North East Texas Credit Union held ground-breaking ceremonies for its new addition on Highway 259 south in Daingerfield.
Travis Moore, 15, of Lone Star, caught a 45-pound kingfish at Port Aransas.
20 YEARS AGO
All elementary school students in the Daingerfield-Lone Star District can buy lunch for $1 and breakfast for 40 cents.
Daingerfield High School graduates ranked very high in the percentage of students who passed the Texas Academic Skills Program.
30 YEARS AGO
A 2-year-old Cason child plunged 30-40 feet into an abandoned well Sunday, but miraculously escaped serious injury.
The Hughes Springs Dixie Youth All-Stars were eliminated from the State Dixie Tournament with losses to Gilmer and Marshall.

Criminal District Attorney Clint Allen has released the following information on cases disposed of in the County Court at Law for July, with Donald Dowd, presiding judge:
Tammy Lanette Bush, 45, Longview, 23 days county jail sanction, extend probation date from one year after expiration date, and must show proof of employment search, plus find suitable and stable employment for hindering apprehension/prosecution, probation modified.
Kenneth Keon Andrews, 33, Atlanta, six months Texas Department of Criminal Justice, State Jail Division and pay $324 in court costs for evading arrest with previous convictions – enhanced.
Josephine Harris Griffith, 58, Atlanta, 30 days county jail and pay $472 in court costs for driving while intoxicated.
Ronnie Dewayne King, 51, Marietta, 120 days county jail and pay $297 in court costs for theft; and 120 days county jail and pay $472 in court costs for DWI, second, sentences to run concurrently.
