Local man has rare brain disorder

On March 9, 2015, Brent Smith, a former Morris County and Titus County Sheriff ’s Deputy, went to his local primary care physician complaining of a consistent headache and left side numbness that included his face, neck, arm, torso, leg and foot. Brent was soon tested for evidence of a stroke by undergoing an MRI of the brain. Upon receiving the results, Smith’s doctors revealed that he has what is called Chiari Malformation.

Hughes Springs Math and Science team take first place in Mount Pleasant

Hughes Springs High School took 22 students to Mount Pleasant on Saturday, Jan. 30 for a UIL Academic meet. The students came home with 28 individual medals, while the Math and Science team finished in first place overall. Individual results are as follows.

Calli Stewart placed first in Number Sense, first in Math, fourth in Science, and first in Calculator for ninth grade. Calli also won second overall in Math. Jacob Sims placed sixth in Calculator and seventh in Number Sense for ninth grade. Chandler Priddy finished second in Math and seventh in Science for ninth grade. Chandler also won seventh overall in Math. Cameron Priddy placed third in Math, second in Science, and fifth in Calculator for ninth grade. Philip Campbell placed third in Science, fourth in Math, and seventh in Calculator for ninth grade.

Girl Scout cookie sales set to begin Feb. 13

Girl Scouts in the Linden and Hughes Springs area will be ringing in the New Year by putting their entrepreneurial and leadership skills to work through the Girl Scout Cookie Program. Girls will begin taking orders for the iconic cookies on Feb. 13.

Orders will be delivered to customers about April 1. Extra cookies will be available at this time for those that miss ordering. The cost of the cookies will be $4.00 per box, with proceeds supporting local Girl Scout troops and programs for the girls. There are eight flavors to choose from: Do-si-Dos, Samoas, Tagalongs, Thin Mints, Trefoils, Savannah Smiles, and a gluten free cookie, Toffee-tastic, giving cookie lovers everywhere a great selection to choose from in feeding that sweet tooth. The Toffee-tastic is $5.00 per box and will only be available during booth sales in limited quantities. As in previous years, Girl Scout cookies remain trans-fat free.

Local company makes donation for Youth Leadership Initiative

At a recent meeting of the Northeast Texas Coalition Against Substance Abuse, director Susan Anderson announced an exciting opportunity that had been made possible by a the donation from a local business. Lone Star Specialties, out of Lone Star, has made a $1,500 donation to the coalition for the purpose of implementing a Youth Leadership Initiative at Daingerfield High School.

The Youth Leadership Initiative will equip youth with leadership skills to reach their full potential, both on and off the coalition, and give students an opportunity to use their skills to develop, implement, and evaluate strategies for preventing substance abuse among their peers. The initiative will also help keep students engaged in positive extracurricular activities, and build self-confidence for the students involved. Mentorship skills will also be taught, that those students involved can then turn around and mentor incoming freshmen, helping ease that difficult transition time.

Junior High places second in Foster Meet

The Daingerfield Junior High Math-Science team kicked-off the 2016 season by competing at the Foster Middle School meet held on Jan. 30. In the small school division, Queen City was first, Daingerfield second, Atlanta third, Hughes Springs fourth, Spring Hill fifth, and Ore City sixth.

Placing in the top ten in individual events were the following students. In eighth grade Number Sense, Victor Gonzalez placed fourth, and Justice Dorman placed fifth. In the seventh grade competition, Laura Carter placed second, and Riley Scholl placed fifth. In the sixth grade competition, Sanaa Fields placed third, Jaci Simmons placed ninth, and Haley Lewis placed tenth.

Hughes Springs honors community with Crystal Globes

The Hughes Springs community gathered on Saturday, Jan. 30, to honor those who have made an impact on the community in the the past year. The yearly Crystal Globe Awards were hosted by the Chamber of Commerce, and were held at the Hughes Springs First Baptist Church Christian Life Center. The evening began with an introduction by Chamber President Jeannie Adams. The first award of the evening was then given by Adams. The Chamber Directors Award is presented to a Chamber member for their involvement in the community as well as the Chamber. The Chamber Director's Crystal Globe was awarded to Linda Sue Teel. Following Teel's acceptance of the Director's Award, Adams then introduced Tim Thornton, who then acknowledged Tammy and Marshall Mashaw, whose company, “Taste This,” catered the Hawaiian themed meal. Thornton then introduced the evening's entertainment, JAZZ by Bryan and Cathey, who serenaded those in attendance with guitar music reminiscent of island entertainment.
