Scouts show reverence

The Boy Scouts of America designates the Sunday before Feb. 8 each year as Scout Sunday. This coincides with the scouting anniversary date, which is Feb. 8.

Scout Sunday is primarily set aside to recognize the contributions of young people and adults to scouting. Scout Sunday can be as simple as asking all Scouts to wear their uniforms to church, or fully dedicating the service to Scouting. The Scout Law says that a “Scout is Reverent” and the Scouts of all ages promise to do their “Duty to God”. These values strengthen youth character in their family, community and faith.

On Feb. 7, six members of Daingerfield’s Cub Scout Pack 220 participated in a flag ceremony at South Union Baptist Church in honor of Scout Sunday. The boys led the flag ceremony, with scouts performing duties as the color guard and calling out the color guard commands. The boys then led the congregation in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Hughes Springs hero prevents fire

By: J. Leslie Riseden

As the current mantra goes, “If you see something, say something.” That’s exactly what Hughes Springs fourth-grader Eric Rosales did in December.

His class was enjoying a showing of Polar Express, complete with hot chocolate. When young Eric thought he smelled something “funny.” He calmly informed his teacher, Laurie Stewart. When she investigated, she discovered that there was, indeed, an electrical short in the urn, which could have caused a fire. Ms. Stewart took quick action, and the children were never in danger -- thanks to Eric being alert and speaking up. Eric was recognized with a special award at the Hughes Springs ISD Board meeting on Feb. 8, which he received with his proud parents and sisters looking on.

Football connects children with officer

Police officers typically have a variety of tools they use when out on patrol. Sergeant Corey Parr, of the Daingerfield Police Department, prefers to use a football.
Parr, who regularly patrols on Jenkins Street, drove by a group of young men playing football one day recently. Parr returned the next day, with intentions of playing football with the students. When he returned, he found Alex Dela Cruz, Javier Flores, and Tommy Olguin sitting around outside.

“I stopped, and asked them what happened to their football,” said Sargent Parr, adding that the boys said they couldn’t find it. Olguin said that when Parr left, they didn’t think he would be back. “He left, and we didn’t know why. But he went to Fred’s, and when he came back, he had the football and gave it to us,” Olguin said.

Cub Scouts spread

“A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.” This is the Scout Law, which even the youngest Cub Scouts are taught from the time they enter the Scouting program. Third year Cub Scouts in the Bear Den of Pack 220 recently put several aspects of that law into action.

On Tuesday, Feb. 9, Bear Scouts went to Windsor Place Nursing Home in Daingerfield and passed out Valentines cards they made themselves. The boys went room to room and through the cafeteria, hand delivering the cards. There were 32 total cards that were passed out. The Bear Den is led by Brandi Terry.
