Bicycle safety important as spring begins

Bike riding is a lot of fun, but accidents happen. The safest way to use your bike is for transportation, not play. Every year, about 300,000 kids go to the emergency department because of bike injuries, and at least 10,000 kids have injuries that require a few days in the hospital. Some of these injuries are so serious that children die, usually from head injuries.

A head injury can mean brain injury. That’s why it’s so important to wear your bike helmet. Wearing one doesn’t mean you can be reckless, but a helmet will provide some protection for your face, head, and brain in case you fall down.

Grab your Easter baskets and bring your kids to the Avinger Park Saturday, March 26. The Avinger Easter Egg Hunt is free and open to all children age 12 and under. Candy-filled eggs will be hidden all over the park. There will be a prize for the most eggs found, and some of the eggs have money in them. Daingerfield egg hunt to be held March 26

The Daingerfield Chamber of Commerce is once again hosting the 22nd Annual Community Easter Egg Hunt. The event will once again be held at the Daingerfield State Park. There will be four categories for children to hunt in this year. There will be a zero to three year old area, an area for four to seven year olds, and an area for eight to 12 year olds. There will also be a special area for those who are physically challenged. All eggs will be filled with candy and small prizes. Lucky children can also find special prize eggs, which can be exchanged at the pavilion for bigger prizes in their age category. Parents are encouraged to come early and bring their cameras for photos with the Easter Bunny. The hunt will begin at 10 a.m., and parents are reminded that there should be no hunting until the signal is given.

After a week on the job, new Daingerfield Athletic Director and head football coach Mike Waldie still remains excited for the opportunities ahead.

“I am walking on air. Everyone has been great, it has been a wonderful experience so far.” Coach Waldie is familiar with the history and lore of Daingerfield High School Football, having coached at Mount Pleasant High School for two years (from 2006 to 2006). He aims to continue adding to the history himself. “I, myself, have never touched a state champion trophy. To walk in that first morning at 6 a.m., and see six sitting in my office, it was overwhelming, but the proudest moment of my career, so far,” Waldie said.

Sam I Am visits local library

Theodore Geisel once said, “You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax, all you need is a book.” Children everywhere read Geisel’s books, although they know him as Dr. Seuss. On March 2, two of Seuss’s most well-known characters stopped by the Hughes Springs Public Library, in honor of Read Across America Day.

In May 1997, a small reading task force at NEA came up with a big idea. "Let's create a day to celebrate reading," the group decided. "We hold pep rallies to get kids excited about football. We assemble to remember that Character Counts. Why don't we do something to get kids excited about reading? We'll call it 'NEA's Read Across America' and we'll celebrate it on Dr. Seuss's birthday." And so, the largest celebration of reading this country has ever seen was born on March 2, 1998.

Sheriff, district attorney reelected

By: Toni Walker

With Super Tuesday completed, several local, uncontested races have been decided. State races, as well as the presidential race, will be decided in the general election, which will be held in November.

Morris County Sheriff Jack Martin ran, uncontested, for election on the Democratic ticket for re-election. Due to no one running in opposition on the Republican ticket, Martin will continue as Sheriff. Also winning re-election in an uncontested race was District Attorney Steve Cowan. Cowan also drew no opponents on either ticket, securing his re-election. The final uncontested county race was that of Tax Assessor-Collector. The seat is currently held by Kim Thomasson, and due to the lack of challengers, she will retain her position.
