On April 7, Cody Williams, of Hughes Springs High, joined nine other Cass County high school students in participating in the inaugural Cass County Government Day. County Judge Becky Wilbanks said that April is National County Government and the county thought it would be a good time to join in the observance by hosting the event.

Daingerfield High School student Jasmine Woods competed and placed 3rd in the Ready Writing contest at the UIL Academic District Meet on April 4. This qualified her to participate at the Regional level at Tyler Junior College on April 23.

The Hughes Springs FFA Forestry Team has been busy the last few weeks and have had some great success. This group of students have competed at the Red River Army Depot Invitational on March 16th at the Army Depot, the McLeod FFA/Hope 4-H Forestry Invitational at Crow-Heath Park in Linden on March 23rd and finally the Marion/Cass NRCS Woodland District Contest on March 24th at Wright Patman Lake. At Red River, the students placed 5th and 7th as teams out of 15. The next week at the invitational, the Teams placed 9th and 14th out of 29 teams. The students learned from their experiences over those two contests and at the District Meet on Lake Wright Patman, placed 1st and 4th. The 1st Place finish awarded one team from Hughes Springs FFA the right to compete at the State Contest held in Nacogdoches, TX on April 27th. Also at the District Contest, Kayloni Carroll received the honor of high point FFA student for the contest in our district.

Hughes Springs High School took 41 students to Region 8 on Monday, April 4. The students competed at the Academic UIL competition. Students placing in the top three in their respective events will be competing at the Regional Academic UIL meet on April 23. Individual results follow.

In Persuasive Speaking, the Mustangs took fourth, fifth, and sixth place. Cody Williams placed fourth, followed by John Willis and Levi Hawkins. Haley Epps placed sixth in Informative speaking. In Number Sense, Cypress Wright placed second. Savannah Wright placed fifth, and Calli Stewart placed sixth. The ladies were also part of the second place Number Sense team.

Cypress Wright placed fifth in Calculator, followed by Stewart in seventh. News Writing had Trishana Carroll placing sixth, while Chandler Priddy placed third in Current Events. In the Spelling competition, Jacob Sims placed sixth. Emily Meade placed fourth in Feature Writing.

On March 30, Daingerfield Police Chief Tracey Climer and Officer Payden Cannaday stopped on Jenkins Street and started questioning a subject in regards to a recent assault report. During this questioning it was determined that the subject, Markeno Royal, 30 Year old from Linden was in Possession of marijuana and cocaine. Royal was arrested for Possession of Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1 over 4 grams but under 200 grams Felony Second Degree and Possession of Marijuana under two ounces Class B Misdemeanor.

Second Degree Felonies are punishable by 2 to 20 years in prison and a maximum fine of $10,000. Class B Misdemeanors are punishable by up to 180 days (6 months) in the county jail and a maximum fine of $2,000.

On March 24, Daingerfield Police started investigation on burglary of building at the Wagon Wheel at Jones Shopping Center. The investigation revealed one person breaking and entering the building twice one night only being able to take a couple of drinks. During the investigation it was determined that Shawn Zielke 27 year old Daingerfield was responsible. He was later arrested on March 31, by Officer Payden Cannaday for this offense of Burglary of Building, which is a State Jail Felony.

State Jail Felonies are punishable by 180 days to 2 years in a state jail facility and a maximum fine of $10,000. State jail facilities are operated by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. State jail sentences are unique in that persons incarcerated in a state jail facility cannot be released early for good behavior.

Morris County issued eleven marriage licenses for the month of March.

Students at Hughes Springs Elementary will soon have a special place to learn outdoors to learn about Texas Ecosystems, gardening, and wildlife such as birds and butterflies.

Through the guidance of Principal Scott Hanes, fourth grade teacher Clair Terrell applied for, and received, a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency and the Jefferson Academy for the purpose of implementing a school garden. After receiving confirmation that the grant had been approved, and under the direction of Cass County Extension agent John Ferguson, Terrell began the process of beginning a keyhole garden at the school.

The Northeast Texas Community College Art Department will hold its annual student art show April 13-27 in the foyer gallery of the Whatley Center for the Performing Arts. The exhibit will feature student and faculty work in photography, painting, ceramics, digital artwork, drawing and design. An artist reception will be held Tuesday, April 19 in the Whatley Center foyer at 2 p.m. The exhibit is open to the public Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to noon.  An early morning accident on March 31 sent three to the hospital with possible injuries.

At approximately 8:33 a.m., Daingerfield Police were dispatched to a wreck at Highway 67 and Fannin Street, in front of Dr. Danny Lilley’s office.

Richard McClure, 74, of Daingerfield, was driving a 2008 GMC Sierra Truck, when he struck a 2007 Hyundai passenger car, driven by 18 year-old Ayanna Townsend, also of Daingerfield. McClure was on Fannin Street pulling out onto Broadnax when a witness driving a truck and trailer was turning onto Fannin from Broadnax.

McClure did not see Townsend’s vehicle traveling north on Broadnax in the inside lane and he failed to yield right of way from the stop sign, pulling in front of Townsend’s vehicle.

Townsend and two small children, who had been passengers in Townsend’s vehicle, were transported to Titus Regional Medical Center for possible injuries.

The crash was investigated by Officer Payden Cannday.
