Service appreciated

Northeast Texas Community College celebrated the service of Bill Priefert, a long-time member of the NTCC board of Trustees, with a retirement reception Feb. 4. Mr. Priefert of Mount Pleasant recently retired from the board after 11 years of service. Mr. Priefert, center, is pictured with NTCC Board of Trustees member John Bryan,left, and NTCC President Dr. Brad Johnson.

Goodson graduates from LeTourneau

Katherine Goodson of Hughes Springs graduated from LeTourneau University in the Fall of 2013 with a bachelor of psychology degree.
LeTourneau University is a Christ-centered, interdenominational institute of higher learning offering more than 90 undergraduate and graduate degree programs across a range of academic disciplines and delivery models. Students are enrolled in programs on ground at LETU’s residential campus in Longview, as well as hybrid and fully online options at educational centers in Dallas and Houston.
Academic majors include aviation, business, communication, computer science, criminal justice, education, engineering, health care administration, health science-nursing, human services, kinesiology, the liberal arts, psychology, the sciences and theology.

Getting an uplift

Crews work on the entrance to the Daingerfield High School the past few weeks, in addition to remodeling the auditorium. The construction is covered under a $5.4 million bond that is a Qualified School Construction Bond that voters approved at the polls.

Phi Theta Kappa wins national USA Today competition

Alpha Mu Chi, Northeast Texas Community College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, earned national acclaim as one of four chapters to win the 2013 Honors Case Study Challenge competition sponsored by USA Today. Tied to the larger Phi Theta Kappa Honors in Action research project, the Case Study Challenge competition gives chapter members an opportunity to focus their attention on a specific area of study. The challenge encourages individual members and chapters of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society to use USA Today newspapers as a study aid and to remain aware of current events. Each of the four winning entrants will receive $500 and be recognized on stage at Phi Theta Kappa’s 2014 Annual Convention in Orlando, Florida in April.

Students qualify for State competition

Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America group from Hughes Springs went to competition in Irving for the Region 3 Conference and qualified for State competition.
Chapter in Review Display team winners were Austin Calcote, Kayla Watkins and Kaycee Willis in second place.
Chapter in Review Portfolio team winning fifth place were Macy O’Dell and Alisha Fields.
Illustrated Talk Seniors winning second place were Dashe Hatten and Shelby Simpson.
Environmental Ambassador winners with second place were Jessica Modisette, Ciara Morua and Anna Applin.
Entrepreneurship winners in second place were Katharina Dietrich, Scarlett Day-Aleman and Reagan Taylor.
Medalists were Kali Calcote, Shilo Sims, Leanna Bartuska with silver medals and Dashe Hatten and Chloe Hall with bronze medals.

Trevor Munn goes on community service trip to Oklahoma City

Trevor Munn from Hughes Springs recently traveled with Southern Arkansas University Housing representatives and two student organizations on a community service trip to Oklahoma City. He is a senior politcal science major.
SAU students contributed to the community of Oklahoma City by moving up to 11,649 pounds of food at the Oklahoma City Food Bank. According to the food bank, it was equivalent to 9,907 meals.
While in Oklahoma City, the 43 students and chaperons also visited the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum and the Oklahoma City Zoo. Two students also won tickets to an Oklahoma City Thunder professional basketball game against the visiting Miami Heat.
SAU Housing takes students in the Residential College and the Leadership College on a community service project each year. They have been on more than a dozen such trips.

Spann makes dean’s list

Sydney Spann, College of Education, Interdisciplinary Studies, has been named to the dean’s list at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi for the 2013 fall semester.
To qualify, undergraduates must be enrolled full time with a minimum of 12 semester hours and must earn a grade point average of 3.65 or better on a 4.0 scale.

Martin listed on honor roll

Mackenzie Martin of Hughes Springs has made the Fall 2013 honor roll at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. Makes SMU’s Fall 2013 Honor Roll
To be listed on the SMU honor roll, students must be in the top 15 percent of their school of record. SMU’s Fall 2013 enrollment included 10,972 students.

Pair arrested for possession of controlled substance

Two Lone Star residents were arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, according to Morris County Sheriff Jack Martin.
Timothy Dwain Lewis, 46, of Lone Star, and his passenger, Amber Shay Hudson, 34, also of Lone Star were arrested by Deputy Jimmy Simpler Feb. 19 at approximately 2:48 a.m.
“The pair was arrested after Deputy Simpler observed a minor traffic violation in the Jenkins community and conducted a traffic stop,” Sheriff Martin said. “After obtaining consent to search the vehicle, Deputy Simpler located crystal-like rocks believed to be methamphetamines.

Hughes Springs’ clinic to close April 30; leaves city without medical facilities

News broke Feb. 24, about Good Shepherd Medical Center is closing three of its Cass County facilities, thus leaving the city of Hughes Springs without a clinic. Good Shepherd Medical Associates Family Health Center, formerly Glenn-Garrett Clinic, will close its offices at 201 E. Second St. in Hughes Springs as of April 30.
Also closing will be the Good Shepherd Medical Center hospital at 404 N. Kaufman in Linden and the clinic at 402 N. Kaufman.
