If you would like to be more active and participate in your city government, signups are being held now for positions in local cities for mayor and/or city council. Avinger will have no election this year.
Daingerfield Mayor Lou Irvin’s position is up this year, along with councils positions held by Martha Campbell and Lonnie Tucker. Mayor Irvin has signed up to serve another term, as has Lonnie Tucker.

Pageant
The Miss and Little Miss Hughes Springs Pageant will be held Saturday, Feb. 22 at 10 a.m. Mandatory registration will be held Friday, Feb 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Hughes Springs High School auditorium. Participants do not have to reside in Hughes Springs or attend Hughes Springs Independent School District. The pageant is open to girls between the ages of 0 to 18 years. TaChrissa Boyd captured a first place win in Daingerfield Lady Tiger powerlifting at a meet held in Sulphur Springs the last week in January. Boyd’s weight class is 165 pounds. Boyd captured another first place win at the powerlifting meet held last week in Winnsboro.  
Daingerfield Lady Tiger Chablis Barber captured a first place win at the Winnsboro meet in the 132-pound weight class.
Shametriece Black scored a third place win with 181 pounds; Adrianna Hill captured third place in the 198-pound weight class; while Jetta Bradley came in fourth in the 123-pound weight class.

Feb. 28 is the last day to sign up for a place on the school board in the school district where you live.
Avinger has no terms up this year. At Daingerfield-Lone Star Independent School District, Neil Roney for District 1 and Maurice Tigert for District 2 have terms that are expiring. Mr. Tigert has signed up for another term.
Hughes Springs has three places coming up for renewal/replacement. Those are Rick Nelson in Place 1, Clint Morgan in Place 2 and Billy Willis in Place 3. Mr. Morgan and Mr. Nelson have filed to run again.
To apply for a position on your local school board, contact the school’s administration office.
