School board signups are open until Feb. 28

Feb. 28 is the last day to sign up for a place on the school board in the school district where you live.
Avinger has no terms up this year. At Daingerfield-Lone Star Independent School District, Neil Roney for District 1 and Maurice Tigert for District 2 have terms that are expiring. Mr. Tigert has signed up for another term.
Hughes Springs has three places coming up for renewal/replacement. Those are Rick Nelson in Place 1, Clint Morgan in Place 2 and Billy Willis in Place 3. Mr. Morgan and Mr. Nelson have filed to fun again.
To apply for a position on your local school board, contact the school’s administration office.

Mayor, city council positions open in local cities

If you would like to be more active and participate in your city government, signups are being held now for positions in local cities for mayor and/or city council. Avinger will have no election this year.
Daingerfield Mayor Lou Irvin’s position is up this year, along with councils positions held by Martha Campbell and Lonnie Tucker. Mayor Irvin has signed up to serve another term.

Early voting in primary election begins Feb. 18

Early voting in the primary election begins Feb. 18 and ends Feb. 28. The primary election is March 4, 2014.
In Cass and Morris counties positions open are for county clerk, district clerk, treasurer, county judge, commissioners of Precinct 2 and Precinct 4 and justices of the peace.
In Cass County the position of criminal district attorney is also open.
In Cass County on the Democratic ticket, those signing up to run are Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Gina Bassham, County Clerk Jannis Mitchell, Tina M. Richardson for district attorney and Precinct 2 Commissioner Danny Joe Shaddix.

Hometown Person

Full name: Sheri Jean Kramer.
I have lived in: The Dallas/Fort Worth area until nine years ago when I moved to Daingerfield to be closer to my parents.
Family:  I have two sons, Weston and Clayton, who live in Arlington; two grandchildren, Clayton, 9, and Isabel, 3. I have two brothers, Phil Johnston who lives in Daingerfield and Mike Johnston who lives in Colorado.
Pets: I have a cat named Amber Eyes and a dog named Dolly.
Occupation:  I work as office manager for the Daingerfield Chamber of Commerce.
One of the best things about my job is:  It is new and therefore challenging.  I am happiest when I am learning and accomplishing.
My ideal vacation is:  On a beautiful beach with all-inclusive amenities.
My hero is:  My mother.  She continuously strives for improvement in the quality of life, and is always there for you if needed.

Daingerfield Tiger senior Kris Nix is named to the First Team Defense of District 12-3A in the All-District selections for 2004.
Queen Esther Evans is honored by the owners and staff of Windsor Place in Daingerfield at her retirement party.

Daingerfield football star Carlos Evans commits to play at Trinity Valley College next season.
The city of Daingerfield hires Joe Farino, a Daingerfield patrolman, as the new chief of police.
George Fite, chosen as Hughes Springs chamber of Commerce Man of the Year, said volunteerism is what makes his city a great place to live.

The Avinger Indians continue their roll through District basketball with a 68-30 thrashing of the McLeod Longhorns.

Pageant
The Miss and Little Miss Hughes Springs Pageant will be held Saturday, Feb. 22 at 10 a.m. Mandatory registration will be held Friday, Feb 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Hughes Springs High School auditorium. Participants do not have to reside in Hughes Springs or attend Hughes Springs Independent School District. The pageant is open to girls between the ages of 0 to 18 years. Navy Band to perform Feb. 20

The United States Navy Band from Washington, D.C., will present a free concert at the Sullivan Performing Arts Center & John Thomas Theatre in Texarkana on Thursday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. Under the baton of Capt. Brian O. Walden, the band will present a variety of popular and classical favorites.  This special performance by the Navy’s premier musical organization is part of the Navy Band’s national tour.  The band performs frequently at the White House and the U.S. Capitol Building, and has participated in 21 presidential inaugurals.
Members of the Arkansas High School Band, Liberty Eylau High School Band, Pleasant Grove High School Band and Texas High School Band will join the Navy Band on stage to perform John Philip Sousa’s “Washington Post March.”

Avinger Indians pick up a double wins last week on the hardwood

Avinger Indians triumphed twice last week on the hardwood as Friday night they overtook Bloomburg 70-47.
Jeremiah Clark’s double double and a combined 25 points from Chiam Loyd and Desmond Chism set the Indians well on their way to another win. Clark finished the game with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Chiam Loyd had 15 points. Chism 10 and Lake Loyd added 9.

Daingerfield graduates make honor roll

Tyler Boyd and Shayvion Hatten, both of Daingerfield, have made the Stephen F. Austin’s Southland Conference Commissioner’s Fall Academic Honor Roll. They were included with 92 student athletes named to the honor roll. The Southland Conference Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll acknowledges participants in all sports sponsored by the league and its member institutions. The honor roll is released within 3p0 days at the conclusion of the fall and spring semesters, recognizing student athletes who maintained a minimum 3.00 Grade Point Average. Student athletes, nominated by their respective academic advisors, must have been eligible to compete in a conference sport during the academic year in which the nomination occurs. Boyd and Hatten both play football.
