Mayor, city council positions open in local cities

If you would like to be more active and participate in your city government, signups are being held now for positions in local cities for mayor and/or city council.
Avinger will have no election this year.
Daingerfield Mayor Lou Irvin’s position is up this year, along with councils positions held by Martha Campbell and Lonnie Tucker.
In Hughes Springs the positions of council members expiring are Gene Ellison, Lee Newsom and Bill Jones.

School board signups are open until Feb. 28

Feb. 28 is the last day to sign up for a place on the school board in the school district where you live.
Avinger has no terms up this year. At Daingerfield-Lone Star Independent School District, Neil Roney for District 1 and Maurice Tigert for District 2 have terms that are expiring.
Hughes Springs has three places coming up for renewal/replacement. Those are Rick Nelson in Place 1, Clint Morgan in Place 2 and Billy Willis in Place 3.

Evans-Thompson

The engagement and approaching marriage of Talisha Lashon Evans and Steven Ladale Thompson, both of Daingerfield, is being announced. The bride- elect is the daughter of Earl Evans and Marilyn Criss also both of Daingerfield.
 Parents of the prospective groom are Georgia Everett of Daingerfield, and the late B.J Thompson. A  Feb. 15 wedding is planned at Love Chapel Baptist Church in Hughes Springs.

Daingerfield Police Department receives $3,000 for fighting DUIs

The Daingerfield Police Department received a $3,000 check from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) for its participation in the annual Impaired Driving Mobilization campaign.
The check is one of 20 presented by the department as part of an incentive program to encourage law enforcement agencies to participate in the program.  The 20 winners are chosen at random from the 132 agencies participating in the program statewide.

I have lived in: Pittsburg, Longview and Mount Vernon.
Family: Wife, SuAnne; and children Austin, Clayton Madison.

Occupation: Principal at South Elementary.
One of the best things about my job is:  The opportunity to impact people in a positive way every day.

10 YEARS AGO
Kaleb Brunson, an eighth grade student at Daingerfield Junior High School, gets an autograph of a National Football League professional gridiron player, New Orleans Saints’ lineman Montray Holland #61.
Avinger Homecoming King and Queen for 2004 are Wesley Keenan and Larrimy Starr.
A groundbreaking ceremony known as ‘The Miracle on FM 1735’ was held at Northeast Texas Community College.
20 YEARS AGO
Patrons are run out of the Daingerfield Dairy Queen by smoke when an air conditioning unit caught fire.
Hughes Springs is one of the only cities in the state that has chosen not to participate in the 9-1-1 system.
C.A. Barber of Lone Star retires after 23 years of service to the city of Lone Star.
30 YEARS AGO
Six Daingerfield Tiger football players are named to the Class 3A All-State squad. They are Johnny Hendrix, Vic Edmonds, Guy Searcy, Willie Everett, Mark Motley, Ladd Freeman and Eric Everett.
