The Buzz: Adoption is very necessary

Awhile back I started out a column with “someday I’m going to be really filthy rich, and I am going to be doing what I love most: helping with animals, mainly dogs.”

Well, I haven’t won the lottery, not even a part of it, but my heart still says dogs are the best people we can ever know in our lifetime.

I have watched with sadness and read reports of animal shelters in large cities having a really rough time financially and with few volunteers to help. More dogs and cats steadily come in these shelters and the people there are given the daunting task to try to get them healthy and then adopt them out. Unfortunately many do not get adopted out and are euthanized.

Austin does top notch job

It is summer time and the library can be one of the favorite outings a family can make during the week. When it’s hot outside, the library is air conditioned and offers a variety of entertainment.
I am always in awe of Jean Austin and her determination, effort, and accomplishments to get a library started in Hughes Springs. A few years ago, it almost seemed like it would never happen and Hughes Springs' residents would never have their very own library, but for Jean, giving up was never in the cards. Slowly but surely the library came into existence.

Letter to the Editor: Daingerfield blessed with great people

Dear Editor:

On Memorial Day, several local citizens volunteered to provide a fish fry for the residents and staff of Windsor Place Nursing Center. The folks at Windsor Place want to how much we appreciate Wayne and Francis Hinson, Susan Mann and Vicki Warden for the wonderful meal and the great time we enjoyed getting to know them.

Reunion was time for catching up

By Marlene Bohr

I was a bit hesitant when I received a dinner invitation from both Joe Austin and his wife, Beverly, to attend the Open Hearth Reunion of Lone Star Steel Company; however, knowing what super people Joe and Beverly are, I decided to attend with them.

It was quite a history lesson as Joe informed me a lot about the open hearth operations at the steel mill.

Letter to the Editor: 'The Greatest Generation betrayed'

Dear Editor:

Nearly 70 years ago, brave American men and women fought in World War II against an enemy that threatened the world. That enemy (Nazi Germany) ruled with an iron fist. They oppressed their own people. They controlled the media; they spied on their own people. They punished anyone who went against the government’s rules.

Now flash forward to today. What are the latest headlines: “IRS targeting citizens,” “Justice Dept. spying on reporters,” “Government tapping our phone conversations,” “Groups punished for their political beliefs.”

Does any of this sound familiar?

The Buzz - A calm voice in the storm

By Marlene Bohr

We are just getting into the tornado season, and we have seen tornados tearing up areas of the country in record numbers.

One thing I talk about constantly is the importance of having a weather radio. I saw a lady on television after the Moore tornado who was looking for one.

The Buzz - Memorial Day

By  Marlene Bohr

When I was growing up, the day celebrated now as Memorial Day was called Decoration Day.
It was a huge thing at our house to get fresh flowers from around our property. We had a bleeding heart bush in the front yard and iris growing, and we would go to the city to my grandmothers and get in her bed of lily of the valley to add to the containers. Yes, we had containers that were made of metal and wood, and those had wires that would secure the containers in the ground. Each year the family would retrieve them out of the shed, and we would make bouquets and head for the local cemetery to decorate graves of loved ones. We would see many others doing the same thing we did on those trips.

The Buzz: Hometown papers are important

The perception of what a weekly newspaper is and what it isn’t always amazes me. Recently, at the same time, I heard two very different opinions of your local newspaper.

One lady was very vocal in her saying she liked to read the columns I write, and she said over and over that she enjoys them. I have heard her say that before and am always amazed and appreciative of her uplifting remarks. Everyone wants to know the job they are doing is appreciated by someone.

The Buzz - Let's clean up East Texas

You see signs along the roadsides out in the country all over the place that say some group has adopted a stretch of highway and promises to walk it often with a trash bag and clean it up.

I think May has really been a great time to drive the highways in our area and see wildflowers. Some of the places are just amazing and I so appreciate the people in town and out of town that don’t mow and let the wildflowers go to seed so they can return next year.

Letter to the Editor: Memorial Day sales are insulting

Dear Editor:

Memorial Day sales seem so unappreciative of our Veterans. I, personally think it is insulting.

Have we Americans forgotten what Memorial Day really is?
