Rogers receives Phi Theta Kappa award

James Rogers of Pittsburg was recently honored at Phi Theta Kappa's (PTK) 2013 Annual Convention in San Jose, Calif. He was one of only 26 members nationwide to receive the PTK Alumni Award of Appreciation.

I have lived in: Daingerfield most of my life; however, I spent years in the metroplex attending college.

Family: No husband and no kids except for six wonderful nephews and a pumpkin niece.

Occupation: I am currently working in contract sales at our local newspaper the Steel Country Bee. Not only are we trying to increase circulation, we are also helping to contribute money to our local animal shelter.

Hume will present program to genealogy society

The Franklin County Genealogy Society will be hosting a presentation of “Truths, tales and legends of days gone by.” Gene Hume was privileged to hear stories, gossip, and legends passed down from his father and grandfather about life in the early days of Mount Vernon and southeastern Franklin County. He has consented to pass some of these tidbits on to the public.

The meeting will be July 15, at the genealogy library on the south side of the square in Mount Vernon. The presentation will begin at 7 p.m.

Happenings

Usher Day

The Pine Bluff Baptist Church on Highway 250 will observe Usher Day on July 14 at 2:30 p.m. The Rev. W.R. Collins and the Floyd Valley Baptist Church of Marietta will be the special guests. The public is invited.

 

Summer Feeding Program

Daingerfield-Lone Star ISD is sponsoring the summer feeding program. Breakfast is served from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m., and lunch is 10:50 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday. All children under the age of 18 eat free. The program runs through July 11. Breakfasts are at the South Elementary café. Lunches are taken to Daingerfield City Park each day at 11 a.m., Lone Star City Park at 11:30 a.m., and County Squire Apartments at noon.

With school ending across the state, families are heading out to Texas State Parks and looking for new trails to hike, rivers to swim, and other activities to enjoy.
This summer, Texas Parks and Wildlife is introducing the Texas State Parks Junior Ranger Explorer Packs at 30 parks across the state.

50th Anniversary Bill and Cathy Zachry of Hughes Springs invite you to be part of their celebration of 50 years of marriage at the First United Methodist Church in Hughes Springs on June 29 at 2 p.m. The couple was married in Pine Bluff, Ark., at the Second Presbyterian Church by the Rev.
