County judge honored for education efforts

Morris County Judge Lynda Munkres has been honored by the Texas Judicial Academy for going the extra mile to be prepared to handle her duties as county judge.

Judge Munkres was inducted on Nov. 16 as a Fellow in the Texas Judicial Academy during the 2017 Fall Judicial Education Session.

Floyd celebrates 100th birthday

Local youth wins calf scramble at Fort Worth stock show

FORT WORTH, TEXAS, February 2, 2018 - Thomas Franklin, a member of Hughes Spring FFA, caught a calf during Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo’s Calf Scramble, earning a $500 purchase certificate for a show heifer and the chance for up to $12,500 in scholarship awards. Franklin’s parents are David and Michelle Walker. Franklin’s award was sponsored by Taxco Produce Company.

Study Club discusses identity theft

The 1936 Study Club in Avinger recently met in their regular January meeting. The club explored the topic of identity theft and how to prevent becoming a victim. A lively discussion was headed by Norma Brock, and some interesting and helpful information was shared. The Study Club also discussed future plans, including sponsorship of a rock painting project for the Avinger School, collection of Teddy Bears to be given to children in distress and collecting toiletries for the Shelter for Battered Women.

Ag Mech students build utility trailer from ground up

HUGHES SPRINGS – Students from the Hughes Springs High School Ag department recently took on a very large undertaking, and they completed the project themselves, with direction from their instructor.

Ag department instructor Ethan Ragsdale wanted to have the students make a large product for submission into area Ag Mechanics contests.

“Taking something from a pile of metal to a finished product is real rewarding for the kids,” said Ragsdale. “It means more to them.”

NTCC Employees receive more than $15,000 in grants

Twelve Northeast Texas Community College employees received a total of $15,473.86 in Whatley Employee Enhancement Grants for 2018.

The Whatley Employee Enhancement Fund was established by James & Elizabeth Whatley specifically for NTCC employees to fund special projects and enhance educational opportunities that might fall outside the regular budget.

Study Club holds Christmas luncheon

Members of the Serendipity Singers from Daingerfield perform for the 1936 Study Club at the annual Christmas Luncheon. The study Club held their luncheon at Pruitt Lake Baptist Church, and a gift exchange followed the meal and entertainment.
