Cypress Bank donates computer to Honors Northeast student

LONE STAR -- For the 10th straight year, Cypress Bank has presented a MacBook computer for the use of Northeast Texas Community College honors students. This year’s recipient is Jordan Whelchel. He is a recent graduate of Daingerfield High School who already has become active in Honors film and Phi Theta Kappa activities at NTCC. Whelchel plans to major in physics.

Cypress, the oldest Camp-County-based bank, has four locations in Mount Pleasant, Pittsburg, Lone Star and Commerce.

Daingerfield State Park introduces “Little Free Library”

DAINGERFIELD – Daingerfield State Park already offers a multitude of activities for park-goers. From swimming and fishing to nature and aquatic classes. Now, the park offers an opportunity for visitors to enjoy a good book in the great outdoors, as well.

Thanks to the work of the Little Pine Friends of Daingerfield State Park group, the park has installed a “Little Free Library” at the amphitheatre. The library offers books for visitors to take and read during their visit to the park.

How to be a good youth sports parent

Parents can take several steps to make their kids’ experiences with sports as positive as possible.

Extracurricular and summer season sports leagues keep thousands of children occupied. Youth sports promote physical fitness and teamwork while helping children acquaint themselves with sportsmanship and camaraderie.

The Journal of Sports Medicine says three out of four American families with school-aged children have at least one child playing an organized sport. While many kids play just for recreation, others play competitively.

Sports are meant to be sources of enjoyment for children, but parental pressure and poor adult behavior on the sidelines can make kids reluctant to compete. Parents who behave poorly may inadvertently pass on bad habits to their children or cause kids to prematurely abandon their athletic pursuits. The following are a few tips for parents who want to encourage their kids’ passions for sports in positive ways.

Apples for the Teacher supports CASA

Apples for the Teacher in Mount Pleasant recently made a donation to Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Titus, Camp, and Morris Counties. Tickets on sale now for Whatley Center events

The Whatley Center for the Performing Arts began selling tickets for individual shows online Tuesday, Aug. 15. Tickets will be available for purchase at www. whatleycenter.com and Discover, MasterCard and Visa are accepted. Tickets may also be ordered directly from the box office via phone at 903-434-8181.

Carolyn Franks, Whatley Center Director, indicated that several of the shows in this year’s lineup will likely sell out quickly.

Lilley wins Schlitterbahn tickets

Douglas Noel Pennington

Daingerfield- Graveside services for Douglas Noel Pennington, 86 of Daingerfield were held July 29, at Hagensport Cemetery with Bro. Paul Cothren officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Nail-Haggard Funeral Home. Douglas was born on Jan. 17, 1931 in Talco to Aron and Lottie Pennington and died on July 25 in Longview.
