DEA Drug Takeback event to be Oct. 28

DAINGERFIELD -- Daingerfield Police Department will again participate in the semiannual DEA Takeback event, where residents can safely dispose of their prescription drugs.

“Daingerfield Police Department will continue to partner with Northeast Texas Coalition Against Substance Abuse to provide the community with resources and information about substance abuse,” said Daingerfield Police Chief Tracey Climer. “Also, the National Take Back Initiative gives citizens opportunities to throw away old or unused prescription medications.

Festival brings crowds to downtown

DAINGERFIELD – Corndogs, basketball tournaments, live music and more all helped make the 30th Annual Daingerfield Days Fall Festival a big draw during the week of Oct. 14. Residents and visitors alike had no shortage of activities during the week.

Daingerfield’s Reeves named “Mr. Football” for week seven

DAINGERFIELD -- Halfway through the season and accolades are beginning to come in for sophomore defensive end Chad Reeves. Reeves was selected as the Rockers, Riders, and Ribs Defensive Player of the Week for week seven, as well as Dave Campbell’s Texas Football “Mr. Football” player of the week.

In Daingerfield’s week seven matchup against DeKalb, Reeves’ defensive stats helped the Tigers negate DeKalb’s star running back, JaQuan Jackson. Jackson was averaging 323 yards and six touchdowns per game prior to running into Reeves and the Tiger defense. Daingerfield and Reeves held Jackson to 145 yards and one touchdown.

In the game against DeKalb, Reeves recorded 11 tackles, with four going for a loss. Reeves also was credited with a sack and two quarterback pressures against DeKalb, and picked up a fumble recovery as well.

Luminant announces closure of Monticello plant

FROM STAFF REPORTS Luminant, a subsidiary of Vistra Energy, on Friday announced plans to retire its Monticello Power Plant in Titus County. In total, approximately 1,800 megawatts of power will be taken offline in January 2018.

Vistra Energy president and chief executive officer Curt Morgan said, “For more than 40 years, Monticello employees have generated reliable power for Texans, and we honor and recognize their service. But the market’s unprecedented low power price environment has profoundly impacted its operating revenues and no longer supports continued investment.”

Hughes Springs native releases first book

HUGHES SPRINGS – Hughes Springs native Lisa K. Brown has released her first book, entitled “If Cheese Made You Thin, I’d be Invisible by Now.” Brown’s book was released on Amazon on Sept. 25.

Brown’s book takes the reader on a journey through her own struggles and accomplishments. According to Amazon.com’s synopsis, Brown “writes in her perfectly self-deprecating way about everything from a lifetime of dieting, her childhood obsession with both Davy Jones and Ernest Borgnine, to her strange marriage and ultimate divorce—all while inducing laughter and tears along the way. You will celebrate her victories and relate to her pitfalls as Lisa shares the insights and shortcomings of a woman just trying to survive (while maintaining her childhood dream of someday becoming Mrs. Bobby Sherman).”

A mother’s legacy: How one woman honors her mother’s fight

HUGHES SPRINGS – With October serving as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it is typical for papers to focus on a survivor and share their story. However, survivors are not always the one who is diagnosed cancer of any kind. Those closest to the one battling cancer have their own battles to fight, and their own stories to tell. Many times, their story continues long after the battle ends.

Amanda Baird’s mother passed away at the age of 48, when Baird was 21. Baird keeps the memory of her mother alive sharing the story of her life and battle with cancer on a daily basis.

Suspect arrested following altercation and shooting

DAINGERFIELD – A Daingerfield man is recovering from a minor injury and an Ore City man has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon following an altercation on Oct. 4 in Morris County.

According to Morris County Sheriff Jack Martin, deputies were dispatched to 630 HWY 259 at approximately 5:20 p.m. in reference to a shooting. Upon arrival, deputies found the victim, who had been shot in the hand. Through investigation, officers learned the victim had been mowing the yard at the residence when Ore City resident Jeff Johnson drove up.

No injuries in two-vehicle accident on Highway 49

No one was injured on Oct. 5 when an 18-wheeler tractor trailer collided with this Chrysler, driven by Mrs. Bobbie Johnson. The accident occurred on Highway 49 in front of Mount Moriah Church.

Alumni association honors distinguished DHS alumni

DAINGERFIELD -- For the past eight years, the Daingerfield Alumni Association has gathered to honor graduates from Daingerfield High School who are distinguished in their careers and communities. On Sept. 30, they once again met, honoring four men who have left an indelible mark on their careers, communities, and those they have met.

Dr. Joe Childress- DHS Class of 1961: Dr. Childress was nominated by Greg and Joyce Gant, and Harry McCain presented the award.

Morris County District Attorney releases monthly case report

DAINGERFIELD – The Morris County District and County Attorney’s office has released their monthly report for September.

The report details cases assessed under Attorney Steve Cowan newly implemented plan to render more efficient and effective judgments. According to County Investigator Ross Dickson, a total of 19 convictions have been handed down under Cowan’s new system. Of those, 12 were misdemeanor and seven were felony convictions.

Those convictions led to 233 days in the county jail and four years in state jail. Forty-eight years prison time has been assessed during September, along with 17 years probation..
