Daingerfield – A store across from South Elementary will be allowed to sell beer and wine following a decision by County Judge Lynda Munkres. Daingerfield-Lone Star ISD superintendent Sandra Quarles received Judge Munkres’ decision Aug. 9. Texas Stop #1, also known as The Tiger Den, was already in business while awaiting the ruling.

On July 25, parties for D-LS ISD and Mr. Mohamed Chaudhry met at the Morris County District courtroom. Chaudry had applied for a Texas Alcoholic Beverage Committee license to sell beer and wine at 1304 Linda Drive, also known as Texas Stop #1 or Tiger Den. Due to the Store’s proximity to South Elementary, the school made the decision to protest the issuance of the license.

Dr. Brad Johnson has resigned his position as President of Northeast Texas Community College, effective Sept. 30. Dr. Ron Clinton has been appointed by the board to serve as interim president.

The Board of Trustees met in a special called meeting on Aug. 10, at which time Dr. Johnson asked to be released from his contract in order to accept a position as Vice President for Strategic Relationships at West Texas A&M in Canyon. Dr. Johnson explained that the change will provide both personal and professional opportunities. He and his wife, Vicki, have parents and other family in the West Texas area. In his new role he will assist an outstanding university with its desire to expand service to community college transfer students.

HUGHES SPRINGS – Military personnel give up many things when sent out on deployment. This is especially true of National Guardsmen. They must be willing to drop everything, including their careers, when duty calls. Such is the case for Hughes Springs coach Chris Castle.

Castle has served since 2016 as a coach and teacher in Hughes Springs ISD. Castle also serves the United States Military with the Texas Army National Guard. He has a total of 11 years in the military, including time as an active member of the United States Army.

DAINGERFIELD – When it comes to war, the term “boots on the ground” refers to military forces actually in the area, preparing for battle. For Kelbi Byrd, there are now “paws on the ground” in her battle with diabetes.

Kelbi was diagnosed with diabetes at age seven and over the last seven years, the disease has gradually made her body unable to determine if her sugar is high or low. In 2015, Kelbi and her family were introduced to Service Dogs by Warren Retrievers (SDWR). SDWR trains service dogs for a variety of conditions, from post-traumatic stress disorder to diabetes. In November, Kelbi’s family, along with the help of the entire community, began raising the necessary funds in order to get Bianca. The needed funds tallied $25,000, and Kelbi’s mother, Kristi, knew they would need help. So, in 2016, Byrd began organizing events to help raise funds.

AVINGER -- Pruitt Lake Baptist Church of Avinger will celebrate one hundred years of service in the Pruitt Lake Community with a Homecoming and Centennial service Sunday, August 13. American Legion Post 351 Honor Guard will open the service with posting the colors and the National Anthem at 10:30 a.m. There will be singing, some history, and a message by former pastor, Bro Franklin Battles, followed by a potluck lunch in the fellowship hall.

DAINGERFIELD – Thanks to the diligence of close friends, a Daingerfield woman is home safe, after going missing for several hours.

Setsuko Lee lives in Daingerfield with her son, who has been diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, and a renter. Although her son is her only family, Lee has developed a large network of close friends. At approximately 9 a.m. July 18, Lee left her home in Daingerfield to take a friend 142 miles, one-way, to Dallas-Love Field Airport. As Lee was accustomed to offering rides to those who needed them, this raised no concern for her friends. After dropping the friend off, Lee called her son, Johnny, around 11:30 a.m. to inform him she was leaving the airport. By that evening, Lee had not returned home.

HUGHES SPRINGS – Children met at the Hughes Springs Area Public Library on July 27 for the final activity of the summer. Thanks to the Hughes Springs Fire Department, the summer activities ended with a splash.

Librarian Jean Austin, as she had every Thursday during June and July, gave away prizes to children in attendance. Each child was given a number when they attended each weekly event. If their number was drawn, they received a building block set in line with the library’s theme of “Build a Better World.” Children who returned with tickets from five other Thursday events were placed in a drawing for a cash prize.

Owners of multi-line telephone systems (MLTS) in Texas are now required to provide direct-dial access to 9-1-1 without having to dial an additional digit such as 9 first before getting an outside line. Business service users (BSUs) of MLTS have until Sept. 1 to comply. Senate Bill 788, also known as Kari’s Law, which requires direct access to 9-1-1, was signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott on May 15, 2015. On March 1, 2016, the Commission on State Emergency Communications adopted Rule 251.16 (Direct Access to 9-1-1 Service) to implement Kari’s Law.

DAINGERFIELD – The Morris County District Attorney’s Office has a new investigator. Former Morris County Sheriff ’s Deputy Ross Dickson has been hired to replace Billy Mack Harrison, who retired May 31. Dickson was sworn in and began work on July 24.

Dickson began his law enforcement career as a jailer in the Morris County Jail in 1997. He then became an officer on the street in 2000. Most recently, Dickson was serving as Sergeant under Sheriff Jack Martin.

“I’d like to thank Sheriff Jack Martin and his staff for their hard work and dedication, and for the opportunity to serve under his direction for many years,” said Dickson.

Dickson will be filling the role of investigator for the County and District Attorney’s office. His role will include investigating cases brought to the DA, and determining the strength of the case and working to ascertain what other material may be needed for a case.
