ARMED ROBBERY

On this date the 22nd of March 2017 at approximately 12:30AM the Lone Star Police Department received a call in reference to an Amed Robbery that had occurred at a local business. Suspect's description is a black male in his 20s and approximately 6ft tall. Attached are photos of the suspect. He is considered armed and dangerous. If you recognize this suspect please contact our agency at 9036562491 and ask for Lieutenant Steven Blythe or Sergeant Bret Gutierrez.

DAINGERFIELD – May elections have been set for area municipalities and schools, as the Feb. 17 deadline to file for most elections have passed.

Daingerfield had three council positions up for election. Incumbent council members Mike Carter and Bob Thorne filed for re-election and are running unopposed, while council member Jesse Ayers decide to seek another team. Duane Grissett filed for Ayer’s seat.

According to City Secretary Heide Edmondson, all council positions are all “atlarge” positions, meaning there are no districts or precincts for each seat. She said the council election is canceled because there are only three candidates.

HUGHES SPRINGS -- Residents will go the polls May 6 to cast their vote on an important municipal issue. They will vote on a petition to legalize the sale of beer and wine for off-premise consumption in the city.

Voters will not, however, be casting ballots for city council positions.

Mayor Reba Simpson decided not to seek re-election and council member James Samples filed as a candidate for mayor. Kirk Bradley is running to fill Samples’ vacant seat and council incumbent Jeremy Ale-Ebrahim is running unopposed.

The following is the second of three articles that will chronicle what each area district- Hughes Springs, Daingerfield, and Avinger- has set out as their proposed innovation plans.

DAINGERFIELD – Daingerfield-Lone Star Independent School District has posted their Innovation Plan for public comment to their website, bringing them one step closer to becoming a District of Innovation.

On Jan. 17, the D-LS ISD Board of Trustees adopted a resolution to become a District of Innovation in order to support local initiatives to improve learning.

HUGHES SPRINGS – Artists and photographers from around the area displayed their work at the fourth annual Hughes Springs Art and Photography Show held at The Legacy Event Center March 2-4.

The show featured original artwork, woodwork, and photography in youth and adult categories. Judges chose the top entry in each category, with the youth category being split by grades kindergarten through grade 5, 6-8, and 9-12.

NTCC Associate Art Professor Debbie Strong, who teaches Digital Arts, Ceramics, Design, and Drawing, judged the art portion of the show. She looked for composition, technique, and overall design.

Anna Precise won the grades 9-12 division with her “Self-Portrait,” followed by “Life’s Mixed Emotions” by Jessica Rodgers and J.J. Jones’ “Self- Portrait.”

Macy Wright’s “Buck in Starburst” won the grades 6-8 art division. Chase Crow, with his “Flag for Elephants” placed second, followed by Vanessa Winders with “August Stewart.”

DAINGERFIELD -- Firemen, police officers, and emergency medical technicians were honored at the annual Daingerfield Chamber of Commerce banquet on March 4 at the Daingerfield Junior High School cafeteria.

Chamber President and master of cermonies Rocky Thomasson welcomed visitors as they began perusing the offerings in the silent auction. Everything from restaurant gift cards to wine baskets and cakes were available for bids.

The meal was a full steak dinner, complete with baked potato and salad, catered by the Daingerfield Fire Department. Students from First Pentecostal Church-The Next Level’s youth group helped serve.

Following the meal, it was time to get down to the business of the evening.

KILGORE -- Two Daingerfield men were arrested Feb. 27 by Kilgore police after methamphetamine was found in their vehicle.

According to the Longview News-Journal, Hubert Dale Mercer, 50, and Randy William Sharp, 53, were charged with possession of a controlled substance, penalty group one measuring between four and 200 grams. Both men were also charged with possession of a controlled substance, penalty group one measuring between one and four grams.

Mercer was released on Feb. 28 on $50,000 bond from the Gregg County Jail. Sharp is still being held at the Gregg County Jail on a $50,000 bond.

According the News-Journal, police officers responded to the 1900 block of Meadowgreen Court on Monday, Feb. 27 when a resident reported suspicious behavior.

DAINGERFIELD -- All high school athletes dream of making it to the professional level. Daingerfield High School Principal Ryan Carroll knows that student athletes must have a plan once their playing careers are over. Carroll grew up in a home where education was stressed, as both of his parents were college graduates. Like most teenage boys, Carroll had aspirations of stardom. “As is the norm for most young men, I had dreams of playing professional sports but, education (college) was always put as a priority in my household,” said Carroll. “I actually participated in many sports as a youth. Soccer, basketball, tennis, boxing, and karate, (and of course basketball). My father was a former college basketball player, but he always kept me active through participation in all sports.” As a former collegiate and professional basketball player, Carroll understands the importance of making sure there is a foundation for after the sports career is over.

HUGHES SPRINGS -- As the deadline to appear on the May ballot approaches, some local communities will be seeing new faces after the elections.

At the Feb. 13 meeting, the Hughes Spring ISD school board approved to hold a joint election with the city on May 6.

HSISD has three seats up for reelection in May. Places 1, 2 and 3 are currently held by Rick Nelson, Clint Morgan and Billy Willis, respectively.

Sources in the administration office report that Nelson and Willis have picked up their candidate packets, but stated Morgan is not expected to seek re-election. At least one candidate has already filed for Morgan’s Place 2 position on the board.
