Edwards, HSISD recognized by military support group

HUGHES SPRINGS – Men and women who enlist in the National Guard Army Reserves depend on their employers support in case they are deployed. Chris Castle knows firsthand the importance of that support, and wanted to recognize his supervisor and employer for their support.

Castle, a member of the Texas Army National Guard, received word during the summer that he would be deployed to Djibouti, in the Horn of Africa. Set to leave in October, Castle will be gone until the summer of 2018. Castle had also been employed by the Hughes Springs ISD as a teacher/coach since 2016. In the wake of his orders, he was unable to fulfill his duties with HSISD.

The district honored Castle prior to the beginning of school with a reception, giving students, staff, and community members an opportunity to express their thanks and well-wishes. Castle then chose to honor his supervisor and employer by nominating them as Patriotic Employers.

Area residents find ways to help Hurricane Harvey victims

As Hurricane Harvey battered the Texas Gulf Coast, many from the Steel Country area watched, wondering how bad it would get, and what they could do to help. As waters began to arise, an amazing outpouring of support from all over began to flood into Houston and other affected areas.

Individuals have been doing what they can, organizing spur of the moment donation drives asking for diapers, school supplies, cleaning supplies, and more to take to affected areas. Men joined forces and traveled with their boats into the flood waters to help rescue anyone they came across.

Churches have also been active, with many gathering supplies and organizing relief trips to deliver any donated items. South Union Missionary Baptist Church offered residents an opportunity to donate to the relief efforts by accepting clothing, dog and cat food, hygiene products, and more from Aug. 30-Sept. 1. A couple from the church then delivered the donations to flood-stricken areas.

Rivals come together for special student

HUGHES SPRINGS – Football in East Texas means the world to many people. Rival games, whether they have been played for years or are just beginning to play again will stop towns dead in their tracks as fans pour into the stadium.

The Hughes Springs- Daingerfield game, which picked back up in 2016 after several years of the teams not playing each other, is no different. However, for one special night, the rival took on a whole new meaning as the teams came together for one special student.

Seventeen year old Justin Myrick is a senior at Hughes Springs High School. Justin was injured by a horse when he was four years old. Justin’s mother, Betty recalls the difficulties of not knowing the extent of Justin’s injuries until he was in second grade.

“His dad and I were truck drivers, so we moved around a lot,” says Myrick. “We moved to Weatherford when he (Justin) was in second grade. That is when they did testing and found the extent of his disability.”

State Park donates school supplies to area schools

By TONI WALKER

DAINGERFIELD – The Daingerfield State Park recently held a back to school bash on Aug. 19. Park goers had the opportunity to gain free admittance to the park simply by donating back to school items.

The park began their festivities with a ranger-led hike around the lake. Visitors could then participate in a Paddleboarding 101 class, where they learned to use the park’s new paddleboards. Visitors could also take part in an “Art in the Park” class later in the day. And, by helping local schools, they could do it all free of charge.
