Nineteen counties in East Texas are agreeing to file lawsuits against manufacturers and distributors of big pharmaceutical companies that manufacture opioids such as oxycotin, hydrocodone, percocet, fentanyl and other addicting medications in the opioid family. Morris County Commissioners agreed unanimously on Oct. 10 to file a lawsuit.

Reid Martin, a lawyer from Martin Walker law firm in Tyler, asked commissioners at their Oct. 10 meeting to join a coalition of East Texas counties against the distributors and manufacturers of opioids.

“We would like to represent this county on a contingent fee contract; there’s no expense to the county; there’s no cost to the county,” Mr. Martin said. “The lawsuit will cost money; we will hire experts and we will do discovery; the law firms will shoulder that.”

“You don’t pay us for expenses and you don’t pay us for fees unless we are successful.”

The men and women who defend the liberties and freedoms of the countries they represent hold a special place in people’s hearts and an eternal spot in their countries’ histories.

Any opportunity is a good time to commemorate the bravery and selfless deeds of military personnel, but certain prominent holidays in November make this an especially important time to thank veterans for their service.

November 11 is Veterans Day in the United States and Remembrance Day in Canada. These holidays honor all military veterans who have provided service to their countries, and that each falls on November 11 is no coincidence, as the day commemorates the anniversary of the end of World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.

Wet weather is partially to blame for a wreck that sent one to the hospital on Nov. 1. The driver of this BMW was transported with undisclosed injuries after her vehicle ran off Highway 144 between Jenkins and Cason.

The Whatley Center for the Performing Arts at Northeast Texas Community College will host the Vienna Boys Choir on Monday, Nov. 6 at 7:30 p.m. One of the oldest boys choirs in the world, it was founded in 1498 and has since delighted audiences around the world with music new and old.

The modern Vienna Boys Choir bears little resemblance to the original group of six boys invited to sing at the Viennese court many centuries ago. Today, the Vienna Boys Choir consists of 100 boys between the ages of ten and fourteen, from dozens of nations, divided into four touring groups. Each group spends nine to eleven weeks of the school year on tour. Between them, the four choirs give 300 concerts and performances each year before almost half a million people. They visit virtually all European countries, and are frequent guests in Asia, Australia, and the Americas.

DAINGERFIELD -- Senior Tiger basketball player Mikal Reeves was recently named the Wendy’s High School Heisman winner for Daingerfield High School.

Wendy’s has honored more than 600,000 of the nation’s most esteemed high school seniors who share Wendy’s values of giving back to their communities, treating people with respect, continuing education and excelling on the athletic field.

Mikal was tabbed last year as District 14-AAA basketball’s Most Valuable Player as voted on by the district coaches. He was a key spoke in the Tigers winning a second consecutive district title and making an appearance in the Quarterfinals Round of the Texas UIL basketball playoffs.

DAINGERIFELD – Morris County District Attorney James Stephen “Steve” Cowan has been recognized by the American Institute of Criminal Law Attorneys as a 2017 10 Best Criminal Law Attorneys for Client Satisfaction. AIOCLA recognized Cowan for his “exceptional performance.”

Cowan serves Morris County as both the County Attorney and City Attorney. Recently, Cowan and Investigator Ross Dickson implemented a new plan to expedite processing and trial dates for inmates at Morris County Jail. Cowan’s new system has decreased the amount of time between an arrest and docket date in certain cases, easing the burden on the jail and court system.

NEW BOSTON -- The Hughes Springs Mustangs traveled to New Boston last Friday for a match-up with the Lions. After much of the season being abnormally warm, this game finally felt like football weather.

Everyone was wrapped up in blankets and jackets, anything to keep warm. Thankfully the Mustangs were able to score early and often and kept the Mustang fans moving, clapping after each score, keeping them from freezing entirely.

At the end of the night, Hughes Springs was able to pull away and fend off a pesky Lion squad 48-30.

The Mustangs were able to put the brakes on a two game losing streak, and Tradarian Craver was the one to do it. All year, Craver has been the engine that made the offense go, and against New Boston, he would not be denied. Craver led all rushers for Hughes Springs and together with 6 other rushers totaled over 450 yards rushing on the night.

DAINGERFIELD – The Daingerfield Tigers Varsity Boys competed Oct. 23, at the Region II Cross Country Championships at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie. The following are individual results and team results:

The top three finishers for the Tigers were Juan Olguin placing 89th, Nathaniel Dancer placing 131st, and Alexis Deleon placing 160th. Also running were Nicholas Ferguson placing 161st, Ryan Lewis placing 163rd, Darron Jacobs placing 164th, and Dillon Jacobs placing 169th. As a team these young men finished 24th overall.

“I was very proud of how these young men represented Daingerfield. They competed hard,” Said Coach Curtis Lewis.

The District 14-3A Cross Country meet was held Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at the Daingerfield State Park. Five of Daingerfield’s six teams placed among the top five.

Emergency crews responded to a two vehicle accident on Highway 11 around 10:20 a.m. Oct. 20. Paramedics and bystanders discuss the accident with one of the drivers involved while wrecker crews work to remove the truck from the roadway. Daingerfield fire crews used the Jaws of Life to extricate the driver from the car, who was then transported to an area hospital.
