Avinger FFA students winning in Forestry at a meet held at the Daingerfield State Park are Louie Carson, T.J. Hobbs, Justin Jacobs and Scott Joubert.

 The Morris County Country-wide Bicycle Rodeo was held Saturday, Oct. 30, at the Morris County Courthouse Annex.
The Cass County Genealogical Society will meet at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 9, at the Atlanta Public Library to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

Tomorrow is the American Cancer Society’s 1983 Great American Smokeout. It is set aside to encourage smokers to give up their cigarettes for just one day.

Daingerfield Christmas Lights
The annual Christmas Lighting Contest sponsored by the Daingerfield Chamber of Commerce will take place on Saturday, Dec. 21.  If you wish to participate, have your lights on that evening.  Awards will be given to the Best Decorated Business, House, Door, and Area.  Everyone is encouraged to participate.  If you have any questions, call the Chamber at 645-2646.

Hughes Springs School receives highest audit status

The Hughes Springs Independent School District board of trustees listened to the audit report given by Judy Moore of Moore and Caver listing the district receiving an unmodified opinion, the highest that could be given. The report was approved at the Dec. 9 meeting of the Hughes Springs ISD board meeting.
Superintendent Rick Ogden reported that construction is nearing completion on the junior high classroom addition.

Cass County Court at Law Report

Cass Criminal District Attorney Clint Allen releases the following information on cases disposed of in the County Court at Law for the Month of September, with Donald Dowd, presiding judge:
Christopher Henry Bond, 38, Hughes Springs, 139 days county jail and pay $302 in court costs for harassment.  
Matthew Kevin Gray, 43, Lone Star, five years Texas Department of Criminal Justice – Institutional Division for delivery of a controlled substance, community supervision revoked.
Roxanne Konrad, 54, Atlanta, 90 days county jail and pay $302 in court costs for criminal trespass.
George Madewell Jr., 63, Linden, 90 days county jail for driving while intoxicated – probation revoked.
Larry Donald Mitchell, 58, Atlanta, 60 days county jail and pay $477 in court costs for DWI, second.
James Ray Richardson, 56, Atlanta, 25 years TDCJ – Institutional Division and pay $389 in court costs for possession of a controlled substance.

60th Wedding Anniversary

Roy and Johneice Broussard will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on Dec. 19, with a trip to Branson, Mo.  with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. They were married Dec. 19, 1953 in Daingerfield.

DWI Tree

Daingerfield High School students joined with Pay Attention East Texas and the Texas Department of Transportation in sponsoring a driving while intoxicated (DWI) tree at the school this year to bring awareness of the dangers of impaired drivers during the holidays. During 2012 there were 15 DWI-related crashes in Morris County, resulting in 15 serious injuries and one fatality. Daingerfield native’s painting is hung in Children’s Clinic

The painting, “Bicycle at Bufflehead Cove” by J. Darrell Kirkley was unveiled and dedicated to permanently hang in the entry of the Children’s Clinic in the Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital in Dallas on Nov. 14. The wall plaque states the dedication is made in memory of the Kirkley’s Daughter, Marisa Ann Kirkley.
Mr. Kirkley is an artist with many accolades to his credit for his art. He has studied under several acclaimed artist such as; Raymond Froman, Portrait School in Cloudcroft, N.M., Paul Stricik, Landscape and Seacape Artist and has attended live drawing classes at Southern Methodist University.

Man dies in early morning house fire

An elderly Hughes Springs man died in an early morning fire Sunday, according to Hughes Springs Police Chief Randy Kennedy. James Griffin, 83, of Hughes Springs died in the fire at his residence.
“We received a 9-1-1 call from a passerby about 1:30 a.m. who saw the fire,” Chief Kennedy said. “The fire department was dispatched to a residence on Hillcrest. When the units arrived, the house was fully engulfed. Later the man’s remains were found in a sitting room at the side of the house. The cause of the fire is under investigation.”
Mr. Griffins’s body was sent to Southwestern Institute of Forensic Science at Dallas for an autopsy.
