Name:  Billy Walker.
I have lived in: Hughes Springs for 75 years.
Family: Wife, Linda; and three daughters, Debbie Daniels, Pam Hall, and Lisa Walker.
Pets: A cat named Dashboard. He rode from Georgia to Marshall on the dashboard of a car.
Occupation: Worked for Reilly Industries for 43 years; owned fireworks stand for 47 years; peddled ice in Hughes Springs in my high school days; and managed a coin operated laundromat for 30 years.
One of the best things about my job is: Meeting the people and selling fireworks.
My ideal vacation is: Going to a state park at Wilhelmina, Arkansas.
My hero is: My Lord.
My favorite tv shows are: Baseball, football, basketball and Lawrence Welk.
My favorite healthy snack is: Bologna and crackers.
A cause I most believe in is: The Salvation Army.
If I could change one thing about East Texas, it would be: The weather.

10 YEARS AGO
After 32 years, Jim Davis retires as Daingerfield Junior High School Principal.
Avinger Cross Country winners who will advance to Regionals are Louie Carson, Tyrus Dowell, and Drew Stewart. Junior high winners are T.J. Hobbs, Willie Moody, and Jerome Linwood.
Jessica Duncan placed third in Cross Country at District, while Betty Tidwell placed eighth.
20 YEARS AGO
Citing the 14th and 15th Amendments to the Constitution, a group of Morris County black voters have filed a federal suit alleging that the county’s existing election system violates their civil rights.
30 YEARS AGO
Gov. Mark White announced recently that he authorized a grant of $1,193,303 in Federal funds to the Northeast Texas area to provide job training and employment opportunities for youth and unskilled adults.
Ronald Scott began his first day of duty as Lone Star’s new chief of police after being named by the City Council.

Breakfast With Rudolph
Breakfast with Rudolph will be Dec.  7 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Daingerfield Public Library. Children will visit with Rudolph and enjoy a light breakfast. Bring your camera to take photos of your child with Rudolph. Call the Daingerfield Public Library at 903-645-2823 for more information.

Family and Friends Day
The Pine Bluff Baptist Church on Highway 250 will celebrate Family and Friends Day on Dec. 8, at 3 p.m. The Rev. James Wall and the Shady Grove Baptist Church from Long Branch will be the special guests. The public is invited.

Christmas Program
The Unity District Association Youth Department will present its Christmas program on Dec. 15 at 3 p.m. at the Allen-Rodgers Retreat Building on Highway 155 in Linden. The evening highlight will be a drama called ‘Take me to the King.’ The public is invited.

Girls in the Afterschool Centers on Education Program at Daingerfield-Lone Star Independent School District performed at the Daingerfield Junior High football game on Oct. 31. Texas Artist makes fourth appearance at Linden Theater

The leaves are turning, the air is cooler and the holidays are fast approaching.
Robert Earl Keen’s ‘Merry Christmas From The Fam-O-Lee’ show is coming to Music City Texas.
Mr. Keen and his band will take over the Music City Texas stage with fun props and seriously great music in a Christmas show like none other. Mr. Keen, Texas’ reigning musical storyteller, has released 18 albums in a career that has spanned over 30 years. Get in the Texas-Style holiday spirit with Mr. Keen Dec. 7 at 8 p.m.

Ore City plans Yule Fest

The Ore City Annual Yule Fest will be held Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Arts and crafts will be in the community center, as well as outside booths and food booths.
There will be games for children starting at 8 a.m. Singing at the Gospel Arbor will feature local groups from 1 to 4 p.m. Music will be used from older hymnals. An antique car show, sponsored by the Ore City Police Department, will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. To enter the show, call Chief Davie Morris at 903-968-2511.
The Christmas Parade will be held Saturday and will begin on Peach Street and turn onto Highway 450, and travel downtown on Main Street. All entries must be in place by 4:30 for judging. Santa will visit with children up to 8 years of age after the parade. The children must be accompanied by a parent.
The Ore City outdoor lighting contest deadline to enter is Dec. 9. The Christmas Tree Park is open to place a tree in memory of a loved one.

Truly Thankful

First National Bank of Hughes Springs, Daingerfield Branch, put together Thanksgiving baskets for families in need. The Daingerfield Branch gathered Thanksgiving dinner for 10 families.

Daingerfield Junior High Math Team captures third place

The Daingerfield Junior High Math Team competed at the Hallsville Math-Science meet on Nov. 16. The team came home with the third place overall trophy.  Queen City first place, Ore City was second, Spring Hill Fourth and McLeod was fifth.
In Number Sense Zach Gilmore placed fifth, Justice Dorman placed first with Victor Gonzalez with sixth place.
Zach won third in Calculator and Hannah Welch won fourth. Justice captured first place, Victor second, Hailey Byrd fourth, Jamie Nix fifth, and Ryan Lewis ninth.
In General Math, Zach placed seventh, Justice placed first, Ryan placed eighth and Jamie placed ninth.
Zach captured sixth place in Science with Hailey in second, Kiara Robinson in third, Justice in fifth, Ryan in seventh, and Victor in eighth.
Coaches for the event were David Brotherton and Pam Scheu.
