Cass County Court at Law Report

Cass County Criminal District Attorney Clint Allen releases the following information on cases disposed of in the County Court at Law for the month of August with Donald Dowd, presiding judge:
Michelle Lee Lowe, 37, Queen City, 60 days county jail sanction for possession of marijuana, revoked.
Brent Wayne Orand, 28, Atlanta, 180 days county jail and pay $297 in court costs for failure to identify as fugitive.
Eric Dominic Parks, 42, Queen City, 60 days county jail for possession of a controlled substance – revoked.
Marc Quincey Roberts, 32, Douglassville, 60 days county jail and pay $297 in court costs for driving while license invalid with previous convictions.
Clydell Strain, 44, Deberry, 90 days county jail and pay $297 in court costs for evading arrest/detention and 12 months in Texas Department of Criminal Justice - State Jail Division and pay $324 in court costs for theft.

Pesticide applicator training to be held Dec. 5 and 10

Private pesticide applicators can earn five to 10 continuing education units toward the renewal of their licenses at trainings held on Dec. 5 and Dec. 10 at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center at Overton.
Participants can earn five continuing education units by attending the training on either day, or 10 total if they attend both days, said Dr. Vanessa Corriher-Olson, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service forage specialist at Overton.
The Dec. 5, training program will include presentations on woody weed and brush control, calibrating and maintaining spraying equipment, Bermuda grass myth busting and aquatic weed control, she said.
The Dec. 10, training presentations will include information on the latest Texas Superstar horticulture plants, control of bedbugs, ants and termites, garden and fruit tree insect control, turfgrass fertility and water management and turfgrass weed control.

Northeast Texas Community College to hold agriculture classes

Enrollment in the spring semester for Northeast Texas Community College begins Jan. 13.
The ag department is offering a wide variety of courses in the spring, including: ag-economics, wildlife and conservation management, soil science, grass-fed livestock, processing small farm products, surface and groundwater collection, and beef cattle production. Each of these classes will provide knowledge and skills needed to better manage property and natural resources.  In all, 13 courses are offered in agriculture studies.  For a complete listing of courses for spring refer to www.ntcc.edu/ag or call 903-434-8139 to register today.

Pink Walk

Northeast Texas Community College celebrated Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a Pink Rain Walk-A-Dollar-Thon that raised $455.40 to benefit Sally’s Hope. More than 100 students and employees gathered on the plaza at lunchtime decked out in pink to make a half-mile walk around campus in support of and in memory of breast cancer victims. After the walk, participants made donations and enjoyed “pink rain” refreshments. The event was co-sponsored by the NTCC Student Government Association and the Baptist Student Ministries.

College participates in disaster preparation exercise

Students and faculty members from the Northeast Texas Community College LVN Nursing, Emergency Medical Services, and Medical Assisting programs received hands-on, real world training as they participated in a disaster preparation exercise in Atlanta, Texas. The full-scale, 72-hour exercise was directed by Homeland Security and in conjunction with the ArkTex Council of Governments.
The goal of the event was to give members of disaster teams, including first responders, a chance to find out how to function in a crisis situation. It simulated conditions of a major tornado and was designed to gauge the community’s current level of preparedness and determine where opportunities for improvement exist.

Dr. Kim Wommack wins fittest employee award

Northeast Texas Community College employee Dr. Kim Wommack received the college’s Fittest Employee of the Month for November.
“Late last year, I was diagnosed with stomach ulcers as a result of taking Aleve for the pain in my hands,” Dr. Wommack said. “My hands were hurting so bad that I was losing function and strength. As an artist and pottery instructor, this was a real problem. Due to the risk of ulcers, I could no longer take over-the-counter pain medications to relieve my pain.

Road conditions Monday morning

Road conditions and driving trips released by Texas Department of Transportation

As the Texas Department of Transportation continues to monitor and address freezing precipitation and snow on statewide roadways, the agency is asking drivers to stay off all roads in impacted areas. While drivers may think roadways are fine, black ice covered by snow is a hazard and can cause deadly crashes. In the Panhandle and across northern Texas, TxDOT snowplows and de-icing trucks continue to deploy as necessary, and crews will work around the clock to clear roads and assist where needed.
The following is a list of closures/hazards throughout impacted parts of the state. In every area where hazardous conditions exist, TxDOT crews are out clearing roadways as much as possible:
