Tony Lee Walker was found guilty of capital murder by a Morris County jury on Monday, Nov. 15.
Texas voters overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment on Nov. 2 that gives t hem final say on a state income tax, if one is ever proposed.

Carol Hutchins of Hughes Springs has been named a 1984 United States National Award winner in leadership service.
Senior class favorites at Daingerfield High School for this year are Kim Rouse and Jeff Johnson.

Thanksgiving Service
Churches in Lone Star will gather for an annual Thanksgiving worship service, Sunday, Nov. 24, at 6 p.m., at First United Methodist Church in Lone Star. There will be special music from people in various churches as well as a message from scripture. Following worship, there will be food and fellowship. The church is located at 818 N. Main (US 259) in Lone Star.

Breakfast With Rudolph
Breakfast with  Rudolph will be Dec.  7 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Daingerfield Public Library. Children will visit with Rudolph and enjoy a light breakfast. Bring your camera to take photos of your child with Rudolph. Call the Daingerfield Public Library at 903-645-2823 for more information.

Club plans Fourth Annual Reindeer 5K Run/Walk

The SIFE/Enactus Club of Northeast Texas Community College will host the Fourth Annual Reindeer 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 8 a.m. The run will be held on the NTCC campus and there is no entry fee for participants.
“In the spirit of giving and to honor your continued support of our college and students, we are not charging a registration fee to run or walk this year. We have been fortunate to have some wonderful sponsors that will be announced and honored on the morning of the run,” Heidi Wooten, SIFE/Enactus Co-Sponsor, said.
Instead, donations will be accepted on the morning of the run and t-shirts will be on sale for $15. All proceeds will directly benefit those so drastically impacted by the typhoon that recently devastated the Philippines.

Spring registration and intersession courses underway at college

Registration for the spring 2014 semester is underway at Northeast Texas Community College. Students may also register for the holiday intersession term.
Intersession courses run Dec. 16 through Jan. 6. These intensive online classes allow dedicated students to earn full college credit in about two weeks. Spring 2014 classes begin on Monday, Jan. 13. Learn more at www.ntcc.edu/intersession.
Current students may sign up for classes online via the MyEagle portal at mycampus.ntcc.edu. New students should fill out an application for admission and complete a financial aid application as soon as possible. Instructions are available at www.ntcc.edu/apply.

Sales of beer and wine in Daingerfield receive voter’s approval

The majority of voters prevailed in the city election for the sale of beer and wine for off-premises consumption in Daingerfield. The measure passed by 125 votes for and 87 votes against.
City Manager Carl Teel commented on the passage of the new law.

Lone Star Mayor began life of continuous service in 1971; still serves

Lone Star Mayor Karl Stoermer spent most of his life in service of his country and continues with service to this day.
Mayor Stoermer spent over 20 years in all facets of Air Force information technology. He began his career with a reserve commission in the United States Air Force as a second lieutenant upon graduation from Texas A&M University-College Station. He graduated with a bachelor of science degree in industrial engineering in 1971 and a master’s degree in systems management from the University of Southern California in 1979.
He was a computer and communications officer in the Air Force from June of 1971 to Jan. 31, 1993, when he retired from active duty. He retired in the grade of lieutenant colonel.

Julia Beers captures Female Vocalist of the Year Award

Julia Beers of Hughes Springs, an award winning vocal talent, has captured the East Texas Female Vocalist of the Year Award. Julia was notified of the award during ceremonies at the KE Bushman’s Celebration Center at Bullard on Sept. 19.
In final tallies, there were 114,000 votes, 845 nominees, 145 finalists, and 31 winners.
Julia has been singing at various venues around the East Texas area. The 14-year-old, and freshman at Hughes Springs High School, starting singing when she was 5 years old and began recording when she was 12, according to her father, Greg Beers. She sings pop music ballads.
“She recorded a five-song CD,” Mr. Beers said. “Hopefully it will be out in the next few weeks. A single of that release was out in July called “Good Life.” She helped write the song, along with her producer, Darin Michael Productions of Chattanooga, Tenn.”

Sign-ups for county positions continue

Sign-ups for county positions on the primary ballot began Nov. 9. The primary election is March 4, 2014.
In Cass and Morris counties positions open will be for the county clerk, district clerk, treasurer, county judge, commissioners of Precinct 2 and Precinct 4, justices of the peace, and district judge of the 276th Judicial District.
