Treasure Trails is Friday and Saturday

Treasure Trails Fall 2013 promises to be a treasure-filled event with many citizens planning yard sales Friday and Saturday. This year eight cities are combining in the East Texas Treasure Trails event for garage sales. Those cities include Avinger, Daingerfield, Hughes Springs, Lone Star, Mount Pleasant, Naples, Omaha and Pittsburg.

Water rates will remain the same for member cities

The budget was adopted and water rates will remain the same, according to action taken by the board of directors at the Northeast Texas Municipal Water District Aug. 26 meeting. The adopted budget is $6.85 million compared to $6.83 million last year. The water rate for member cities is $1.48 per 1,000 gallons and $2.30 per 1,000 gallons for non-member cities.
General Manager Walt Sears said the drought is affecting water consumption.

Smith receives mass communication degree

Jarvis M. Smith, a 2009 graduate of Daingerfield High School, graduated Aug. 17 from Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View with a bachelor of arts degree in mass communication and a minor in behavioral and political science in the William “Billy” Nicks Sr. Health and Physical Education Arena.

Extension Service will host lawn and garden expo

If you are one of those that goes the extra mile to take pride in your lawn and garden, plan to attend the Texas A&M AGriLife Extension Service lawn and garden expo on Saturday, Sept. 14.
The lawn and garden expo will be held at the Daingerfield Methodist Church activity center, according to Extension Agent Robert Grant. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., with the expo following from 9 to noon.

New traffic, criminal laws took effect on Sept. 1

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) today highlighted notable traffic and criminal laws that go into effect on Sept. 1.
“As a result of these new provisions, Texans now have additional protection while traveling our roadways, and individuals who disregard our laws will face tougher penalties for a variety of crimes,” said DPS Director Steven McCraw. “DPS encourages all residents to educate themselves about the laws affecting their lives and to do their part in keeping Texas safe.”
Please note that the following is not a comprehensive list of all new laws passed by the Texas Legislature.

Full name: Rebekah Massey.
I have lived in: Hughes Springs.
Family: Husband, Mickey; sons, Jacob and Zachary and daughter, Rachel.
Pets: Jentu and Mini are our dogs we also have two horses, Sam and Cookie.
Occupation: Homemaker and part time foreign missionary.
One of the best things about my job is: Being able to spend time with my kids and being able to be their first teacher in life.
My ideal vacation is: Going to Venice, Italy with my family to ride on a gondola.
My hero is: My husband, Mickey Massey, because he’s faced many hardships in his life, including being a burn survivor, but still loves people and gets up to face people every day.
My favorite TV shows are: Doctor Who and Duck Dynasty.
My favorite healthy snack is: Guacamole.
A cause I most believe in is: Mission work and Autism Speaks.
If I could change one thing about East Texas, it would be: No mosquitoes.

Happenings

Pancake Supper
The Daingerfield Lions Club Pancake Supper will be held Sept. 6 at the Daingerfield High School cafeteria. Food will be served from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. before the football game. Take outs and tickets are available at the door.

Homecoming
The annual Floyd Hill Homecoming will be held Sunday, Sept. 8, at the Red Hill Community Center located at the intersection of Highway 8 and Farm-to-Market Road 995.
The president will give a devotional at 11:30 a.m., with a covered dish luncheon to follow. The cemetery business meeting will be held after lunch. With the cost of upkeep for the church, church grounds and cemetery, all interested parties are urged to attend.

Daingerfield Councilwoman Debbie Spencer and City Manager Marty Byers show a bronze plaque that will be placed in the Daingerfield City Park on behalf of the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife.
Daingerfield Public Works employee Todd York presented the public works activities’ report to the Daingerfield City Council.
Bill Jones and Charles Wallace, members of American Legion Post 0351, raise the flag at a Flag Day Ceremony held at the Hughes Springs Elementary School.

The Hughes Springs Mustangs lost 4-0 to Clarksville at Mustang Stadium Thursday night in their last scrimmage before the regular season.
Every Texas hunter born on or after Sept. 2, 1971, must successfully complete a hunter education training course.
