“All good things must come to an end.” That saying is as true in business as it is in life. And, the time has come for Gene and Vickie Nixon’s restaurant venture in Daingerfield to end. Kissin’ Kousins, located across from the Morris County Courthouse, has closed their doors after 13 years.

“This was a hard decision, but it is time for us to start the next chapter in our lives,” said owner Vickie Nixon. “We have many good memories, and have met a lot of great people,” she added. Nixon added that, since the first of the year, they have seen a decline in their business.

At the regularly scheduled meeting of the Daingerfield City Council, the council discussed hazardous conditions on Carey Lane in Daingerfield. Mayor Lou Irvin, during the departmental reports, brought up the topic at the request of citizens who had spoken with her. Nancy Loyd, a resident in the area, was also in attendance to address concerns with the state of Carey Lane.

A two-car motor vehicle accident on W. M. Watson Boulevard on Wednesday, May 11, sent both drivers to the hospital with possible injuries.

At approximately 12:18 p.m., Daingerfield Police was dispatched to Watson Boulevard, on front of Dollar General, for a motor vehicle accident. A silver, 2005 Mercury, driven by 83 year-old Sybil Walton, of Daingerfield, was traveling west on Watson, behind a 2008 Dodge Nitro driven by 58 year-old Sharon Washington, also of Daingerfield.

Washington slowed down to turn into the Dollar General parking lot, and was struck by Walton’s vehicle, who had failed to control her speed. Champion Emergency Medical Services transported both women, who were the only occupants of their respective vehicles, to Titus County Regional Medical Center for treatment of possible injuries.

Daingerfield Police Sergeant Corey Parr investigated the accident.

Randal Lee, Criminal District Attorney, releases the following information on cases disposed of in the 5th Judicial District Court for the Month of April, 2016, with Bill Miller, Presiding Judge:

Blake Michael Sanford, of Naples, was convicted of Burglary of a Building. His community supervision was revoked, and he was sentenced to 15 months in the State Jail Division of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Anthony Scott Vaughn, of Hughes Springs, was convicted of Assault Causing Bodily Injury. He was sentenced two years of Deferred Adjudication, and must pay $1,000 fine plus $262.00 court cost.

The Daingerfield Police Department is working to educate young drivers about consequences associated with underage drinking and driving.

In a statement from Daingerfield Police Chief Tracey Climer, “We are educating young drivers about the consequences to underage drinking and driving. Please join us in telling sixteen and seventeen year olds that underage drinking and driving is the Ultimate Party Foul. Help spread the message by promoting the emoji keyboard, available now for free download in both the Apple and Goodge Play app stores.”

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among teens in America, and almost half of teens killed in crashes are the drivers themselves.

Despite a minimum legal drinking age of 21 in all 50 states, almost one-quarter of young drivers involved in fatal traffic crashes had alcohol in their systems.

 Daingerfield, TX—All first graders at West Elementary School were recently given free prevent tooth decay kits through the Fantastic Teeth Fan Club. Members of Iron Bluff Masonic Lodge, led by Kenneth Kennedy, assembled and delivered more than 95 dental hygiene kits to the school.

The Fantastic Teeth Fan Club, sponsored by Masonic Home and School of Texas (MHS), strives to prevent suffering from toothaches, reduce missed school days due to dental problems, and cut costs for dental treatment.

Prevent tooth decay kits contain: a toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, healthy teeth sticker, twominute timer (optimal brushing time), Tips for Healthy Teeth educational info for parents in both Spanish and English, and a summary of MHS services.

Picnics and Parties

Savannah Wright of Hughes Springs received a Trustee Scholarship to Harding University, amounting to eight semesters of full tuition. Wright is one of 27 Trustee Scholars who will be freshmen at the University this fall.

The scholarship is highly competitive and attracts numerous applicants each year. To be considered, candidates must score at least a 31 on the ACT or 1360 on the SAT and must have a 3.5 or higher high school GPA. Other areas of academic achievement, leadership and extracurricular involvement are also taken into account, and candidates are interviewed by a selection committee at the University. Wright will also be considered for admission into the honors scholars program, the top tier of the Honors College.

A local Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities teacher organized a field day for area PPCD students. Ms. Karen Rawlins, from Hughes Springs, organized the first PPCD Field Day, in which seven schools participated.

Rawlins said the idea stemmed from Special Olympics. “To participate in Special Olympics, students must be at least six years old,” said Rawlins, who added, “They said we were welcome to come and watch. Well, watching is not one of our strong points.”

Three local scout leaders recently earned their Wood Badge beads, which is the highest adult training program in Boy Scouts. Cub Master Randy Terry, along with den leaders Daniel Walker and Brandi Terry, received their recognition at the annual NeTSeO Trails Council Banquet, held on April 29.

Wood Badge is an extensive training session that takes the adult leaders through intensive training regarding scouting. Leaders must be nominated for the Wood Badge Course, and can only attend the course one time as a participant. The initial training is done over the course of two weekends, at the end of which the leader receives their tartan neckerchief, signifying their membership in Troop One.
