Arbor Day Foundation Offers Tree-Care Booklet

The Arbor Day Foundation is offering a handy tree-care booklet designed to help people plant and care for trees.
Anyone can receive Conservation Trees, a user- friendly booklet featuring illustrations, colorful photos and easily-understood descriptions, by making a donation to the Foundation this month.
“Conservation Trees is an ideal resource for tree planters,” said John Rosenow, founder and chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Taking care of existing trees is just as critical as planting new ones, and proper care ensures communities are able to fully enjoy the diverse benefits of urban forestry.”
The booklet provides details about the right way to plant and prune trees. It also includes tips on using shade trees and windbreaks to save on energy costs, attract songbirds and create a living snow fence.

Civil War re-enactors set to stage battle in Jefferson

Civil War re-enactors representing both Federal and Confederate forces descend upon Jefferson May 2 through 4, turning the historic 19th-century riverfront into equal parts campground and living history exhibit for “The Battle for Jefferson” Civil War Re-enactment during the town’s “67th Annual Pilgrimage” celebration.

The three-day weekend features numerous events in town and the Cypress River Ranch, Farm-to-Market Road 2208 and Highway 59 highlighted by full-scale “battles” at the ranch on Saturday and Sunday. A candle-lit “Illumination” at Oakwood Cemetery, Civil War re-enactors set to stage battle in Jefferson tours sponsored by the Jessie Allen Wise Garden Club, Saturday morning’s parade and skirmish downtown, a grand 19th-century ball and Sunday morning’s “Presentation of Colors” at Christ Episcopal Church are but a few of the weekend’s highlights.

Lake Livingston State Park piloting new campsite reservation system

Campers planning to visit Lake Livingston State Park in the Pineywoods can now select a specific campsite while making reservation under a one-year pilot program introduced recently. The site-specific reservations policy is unprecedented in the Texas State Park system, which has always operated on a first-come, first-served basis when securing a campsite.

So far, park officials give the pilot program positive marks. During the first two weeks of its implementation on Jan. 13, 528 reservations were made for the 10 screened shelters and 34 full-hookup, 50-amp service campsites participating in the program. In total, the state park has more than 170 campsites and 10 screened shelters.

The Texas Champion Dogwood Tree honored as the largest in Texas

The Texas Champion Dogwood Tree is 53 years old and is honored as champion by the Texas A&M Forest Service. The tree is located at 43 Morris County Road 2206, a few miles south of Daingerfield on the west side of Highway 259.

This finding came about when a friend, Sandy Rose, was visiting with Cliff and Wynell Steely at their house, as he was traveling from Detroit, Mich. to his home near Arlington. He observed the size of the Dogwood Tree and suggested that it might be the largest in Texas. It was measured and he sent the measurement to Texas A&M Forest Service.
