Lady Mustangs outscore opponents, 21 to 3

By Rick Colegrove

The ability to strike quick in sports is a mentally demoralizing tool that teams can use.

The Hughes Springs Lady Mustangs use a quick strike offense in this way. They have used their quick strike offense to score an eye-popping 65 runs in the first 2 innings over the last 10 games. No wonder they are 10-0 in that stretch.

With that being said, the ladies followed suit this last week, scoring 13 runs in the first two innings against Queen City and Linden-Kildare, winning both games, 10-3, against Queen City and 11-0 versus Linden.

On Tuesday, Hughes Springs welcomed rival Queen City to town, and the Lady Mustangs brought the “lumber,” smashing three home runs on the night.

The Daingerfield Tigers have a new athletic director, and they will also be working with new coordinators on both sides of the ball. Athletic Director Mike Waldie has brought in two coordinators from Woodville to take the same positions here.

The new defensive coordinator Davin Nelson. Nelson has three years’ experience as a coordinator, and ten total years of experience. Daingerfield will be Nelson’s third position under Waldie; the two also teamed up at Jacksonville and Woodville. When asked what made him follow Waldie, Nelson stated, “He is just a good guy to work for. When he left Woodville to come here, he told me I was his first choice, if I wanted. At first, I wanted to see if I received the head position there, but things worked out for me to join him here.”

Dixie Youth Baseball opens in Hughes Springs

By Rick Colegrove

In case you didn't know, it's baseball season, and in case you didn't know, baseball and softball is kind of a big thing in Hughes Springs. The phrase "start 'em young" applies its self just fine with citizens of this town. On almost every night of the week, you will find parents and coaches, offering instruction to the littlest of the t-ballers, to the oldest group of 14 year olds.

When a little girl or little guy comes to play ball, he or she can rest assured that from the time they are 4 years old to 14, they will have the age group to fit them, and coaches who have devoted their time and attention to provide all the knowledge that they have to try and grow and develop aspiring talent. There are 31 Teams in baseball and softball. Of those groups, there is a total of 351 playing in Hughes Springs this year, the most ever for our town.

Lady Mustangs roll into homestretch of regular season

By Rick Colegrove

Hughes Springs softball is in the home stretch of the regular season. They are also playing some darn good ball right now. At 22-5 on the year, and undefeated in district, the ladies are steamrolling right along. With a single game last week against the Daingerfield Lady Tigers, the Lady Mustangs were able to get in some much needed rest. But first things first, the ladies matched up with Daingerfield on Tuesday and were looking to make a season sweep of the team just to the west of Hughes Springs.

The first meeting between the two teams was a lopsided win for Hughes Springs, by the tune of 14-0. The Lady Mustangs on the year have made it somewhat of a signature to jump out to early leads. The second game with the Lady Tigers followed the script with Hughes Springs jumping on the Daingerfield squad early and didn't let up, winning 11-0 in only 5 innings.
