Tigers pull out win versus Mount Vernon

Over the past several weeks, the Daingerfield Tigers have been on the short side of several 10-run games. The Tigers broke that trend on March 29, with a 4-3 win over Mount Vernon at home.

Dalton Morgan picked up the win after pitching four-plus innings. Morgan registered eight strikeouts, and induced multiple fly outs from the purple Tigers. Morgan also walked and scored in the win.

The Tigers showed patience at the plate, drawing two walks and registering multiple hits after working the count full.

The Tigers will welcome the Hughes Springs Mustangs to town on April 5 for a 7 p.m. matchup. The Tigers will then travel to Queen City on April 8 for another district matchup.

Lady Mustangs cranking out the wins

by Rick Colegrove

At the start of the season, everyone knew the Lady Mustang’s offense was going to be good. The question that had to be answered was how the pitching was going to hold up. Over the course of the season, and specifically this past week, those questions can be and should be put to rest. With Zoe Lanier, Abbye McKinney and Becca Bates on the mound, the ladies from Hughes Springs are shutting down opposing offenses and leaving them little to hit. With each pitcher having an array of pitches, they keep the hitters guessing and induce lots of ground outs while making quick work of them, to boot.

This past week, the ladies went 2-0 and limited Chapel Hill and Mt. Vernon to three total runs. Chapel Hill could only muster on run, while Mount Vernon was able to crank a couple home runs, but that was it.

Lady Mustangs outscore opponents 34-10, add three wins

The Hughes Springs Lady Mustangs played three games last week, scoring 34 runs, while only surrendering 10. The ladies started off the week, playing Queen City on Monday. It was a game that was supposed to have been played on the previous Friday but due to field conditions in Queen City, it was postponed. It was a win for Zoe Lanier, who surrendered only one earned run. But nine Mustang errors led to six unearned runs. Lanier was solid on the mound, churning out a monster number of 155 pitches in seven innings.

Hughes Springs was paced by Haylee Wilson and Bailey Tenbrook, with Wilson going two for four with three runs batted in, while Tenbrook went four for four with three RBI’s and two runs scored. Both ladies belted home runs in the win.

The celebrations have not ended for the 2016 State Champion Avinger Indians. The “Magnificent Seven,” as they have become known across the state, were honored at multiple events on March 17.

The community was invited to the school at 2:40 to meet and congratulate the team on their accomplishments, and they packed the gymnasium. Assistant Coach Lane Loyd, who also serves as the Avinger High School principal, said, “One of the most amazing things is that we were able to accomplish this feat without being able to run a full practice. We never could practice against a full five, because we only had seven guys.”
