Two Northeast Texas Community College Presidential Scholars were recently honored with Eckman Awards for their outstanding performances in challenging honors seminars at NTCC. Cassidy Watkins and Matthew Chambers both received $100 for taking all three honors seminars at NTCC and ending with the highest GPAs. The awards were funded by an anonymous donor in memory of the late Richard and Joan Eckman.

The Cass County Genealogical Society recently held their June meeting and picnic. During the meeting, Society President Charlotte Evans was presented two new books to be added to the Genealogy/Family History Section of the Atlanta Public Library. The books will also be made available for sale by C.C.G.S. Publishing.

“Mills Creek Missionary Baptist Church” is a 144-page book that was compiled by Audrey Rankin and Kathy Peacock. The book was placed in the Cass County Genealogical Records May 14. The book presents the history, minutes, and membership rolls of a church that was active in Cass County from September 1933 to April 2002.

Local cub scouts recently crossed over to the rank of Boy Scout and held their crossing over ceremony at Daingerfield State Park. To thank the park for its support, scouts performed a conservation project at the park, trimming
bushes from trails at the park.

Fireworks displays are a hallmark of summer, and a frequent component of Independence Day celebrations and commemorative events that require a touch of flair. Awe-inspiring pyrotechnics shows lure millions of spectators around the world each and every year.

Many people experiment with fireworks on their own, but that can be dangerous. According to the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission, thousands of people are injured by fireworks in the United States each year. Whether purchased legally or on the black market, fireworks pose a considerable threat. Fireworks purchased on the black market may be especially dangerous, as they likely were not subjected to government regulations and inspections.

Daingerfield High School Principal Ryan Carroll is leaving his position at the end of the week. 

Carroll, who has been principal at the DLSISD campus for three years, turned in his letter of resignation on June 5 to take a position as principal of Foster Middle School in Longview, according to DLSISD Superintendent Sandra Quarles, who reported Carroll’s resignation in her administrative report at the district’s school board meeting on June 18.
