Daingerfield school employees receive service awards

Daingerfield-Lone Star Independent School District employees were honored with service awards in five-year increments. The ceremony was held June 5. 
 
Vicki Lilley and Carla Wallace were honored with 40-year pins. Those receiving 35-year pins were Martha Clifton, Linda Linwood, Sandra Quarles and Linda Rhymes. The 30-year service pins went to Carolyn Livingston and Robyn Shelton.

Hughes Springs Independent School District hosted a going away party for assistant superintendent Sarah Dildine on May 23. Mrs. Dildine and her family are moving to Arkansas this summer.

Trevino named to President’s List

Alex Trevino of Hughes Springs was one of 299 students named to the President’s List at Ouachita Baptist University for the spring 2014 semester.
 
To be named to the President’s List, a student must compile a 4.0 grade point average and be classified as a full-time student, with a minimum of 12 academic hours.

Students named to Dean’s List

Two local students out of 337 students at Ouachita Baptist University were named to the Dean’s List for the spring 2014 semester. The students are Laken Livingston of Daingerfield and Clay McKinney of Hughes Springs. The students will receive a certificate of recognition from Ouachita and will be included in the “National Dean’s List” for 2013-14.
 
To be named to the Dean’s List, a student must compile at least a 3.5 grade point average and be classified as a full-time student, with a minimum of 12 academic hours.

Jennings named to President’s List

Leslie Jennings from Daingerfield earned a spot on the Spring 2014 President’s List at Southern Arkansas University where she is a senior biology-pre health major.
 
Miss Jennings was one of 253 students named to the spring President’s List. To qualify, a student must earn a 4.0 GPA for the semester.

Trevor Munn receives degree

Trevor Munn receives a degree from Southern Arkansas University.
 
Trevor Munn from Hughes Springs was honored for completing her degree at the Southern Arkansas University Spring Commencement on May 9, 2014.
 
Ms. Munn was a political science/criminal justice major, and graduated from the College of Liberal and Performing Arts with a bachelor of arts degree.

CASA’s Janet Martin Legg Home

The Janet Martin Legg Home in Mount Pleasant is taking on a new role in the community as the home for CASA of Titus, Camp and Morris Counties.

CASA, which stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates, professionally trains and supports community volunteers to speak up in court and in the child protection system for children who are abused and neglected and in foster care.

“We are deeply honored that the Mount Pleasant Community Fund has selected CASA of Titus, Camp and Morris Counties to continue the legacy of caring for abused and neglected children in our community,” said Michelle Woodruff, executive director.

Family and Consumer Sciences Have you heard of the “Sandbox Philosophy of Life?” Probably so, but if not, I’d like to share it with you. Your child/ren and grandchild/ren may be experiencing this philosophy now. Sure makes good sense. 
 
“Most of what I really need to know about how to live and what to do, and how to be, I learned in kindergarten. Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate school mountain, but there in the sandbox at nursery school.

College students capture coveted scholarships

Northeast Texas Community College students Matthew Jordan of Pittsburg and Stephen Milburn of Mount Pleasant were recently awarded Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarships. This prestigious award covers up to $30,000 annually at the university of the student’s choice for up to three years. Only 85 students were selected from more than 3,500 applicants for this national honor.
