Preserve foods at home? Yes you can, but do it safely. 
 
An abundance of home grown fruits and vegetables often triggers the desire to can foods at home. While this can be a fun and rewarding way to keep foods long after the season ends, care must be taken to ensure that foods canned at home are safe to eat.

Public hunt drawing system going paperless

Effective with this summer’s applications, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s popular Public Hunt Drawing System will be online-only. 
 
The Public Hunt Drawing System offers affordable hunting experiences in more than two dozen different hunt categories, including eight specifically for youth only.

Charlie Hampton is honored with the Golden Trowel Award

Charlie Winton Hampton, a 33rd degree Mason and his wife, Helen, were surprised recently at Pleasant Springs Health Care Center in Mount Pleasant. Friends and family gathered to see Mr. Hampton receive the Golden Trowel Award, presented to him as a long-time member of the Marietta Masonic Lodge #1181.

Sheriff adds new security camera system to jail

Technology is advancing and improving considerably at the Morris County Jail, according to Sheriff Jack Martin.
 
“We have added seven new cameras at the sheriff’s department and courthouse annex,” Sheriff Martin said. “We have also replaced two cameras. We hired 359 Solutions out of Winnsboro. We now have a more updated security camera system. We can scan even down to the license plates and inspection stickers of vehicles parked around the buildings.”

Byerly exhibits hometown and school pride

A love of tennis and community has spurred a high school student to give back to her school and community. Audrey Byerly, a high school student at Avinger School, said she wants to give back to her school and community by gathering enough grants, donations and pledges to resurface the school tennis courts, replace the netting and poles and lights. She also wants to replace the back board.

Area gears up for Fourth of July festivities

The Avinger Area Chamber of Commerce will host a “Picnic in the Park” in the Avinger Community Park on July 4. Starting at 6:30 p.m. there will be hot dogs with all the fixings served and snow cones for dessert. Fireworks will begin at 9 p.m. sponsored by the Avinger Area chamber of Commerce. Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy a hometown evening of good food, fun, and friendship.

Plans underway to resurface selected city streets

The street project began last year will continue this year on some of the city streets in Daingerfield. The Daingerfield City Council met June 17 and approved street sealcoating, reconditioning and asphalt overlay.

Construction nearly completed for school district under $5.4 million bond

Finishing touches are all that is needed to complete work done under a $5.4 million bond for the Daingerfield-Lone Star Independent School District, according to Superintendent Sandra Quarles. The update was given to the board of trustees at their June 16 meeting.
