Local woman chooses double mastectomy to deal with her cancer

Faced with breast cancer, an East Texas woman’s decision to have a double mastectomy was scary, but a decisive one for her. Amy Batts, 40, found a lump in her breast in May of last year. 
 
“I made an appointment with the doctor and they sent me for a mammogram,” she said. “Then I was sent for a biopsy.

Hughes Springs’ resident arrested second time on same charges

Richard Fininen, 49, of Hughes Springs was arrested June 4, and charged with inappropriately touching a child, according to Hughes Springs Police Chief Randy Kennedy.

West Nile hasn’t made an appearance locally yet

As the weather heats up, reports will start coming in about new West Nile Virus deaths throughout the state and the nation. The rain and hot weather combination makes a good breeding ground for mosquitoes. However, not all of them carry the West Nile Virus.

Council annexes land into the city of Hughes Springs

The Hughes Springs City Council approved an annexation petition at a special called meeting May 27 at the city council chambers. A petition had been received from Terri McMillon to annex 4.20 acres of property into the city. “We received the petition on May 16; however, there was not time enough to act on it at the May 20 meeting; therefore, we called a special session,” City Secretary George Fite said.

 The 27th Daingerfield Steel Country Festival will be Oct. 2 - 4, opening with a community stew and style show Oct. 2. Put on your dancing shoes as on Oct. 3 there will be a community dance and your comfortable shoes for a full day of festival activities on Oct. 4
