Former Marine still sets patriotic example for all

Patriotism is still very much alive and well in the East Texas area and a former Marine, along with many others, strive to keep it that way. Mike Jenkins grew up in Hughes Springs, graduated from high school in Hughes Springs and except for his service in the U.S. Marines, he has always lived in Hughes Springs.

Bishop graduates

Wesley Alan Bishop, a 1999 graduate of Hughes Springs Independent School District, and son of Steve and Rita Bishop, graduated May 16 from Texas Tech University. He received a master’s degree in business administration and a master’s of science in finance. 
 
He and his wife, Kara, reside in Lubbock.

‘Never Happens’ tells true stories of water tragedies

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has released a sobering video aimed at motivating teens and young adults to follow simple safety guidelines while boating. It debuts in the wake of an unusually high number of drownings and fatal boating accidents across the state in recent weeks.

College to host medication aide course

Northeast Texas Community College will host a medication aide course this summer beginning Monday, June 9. This course is 144 hours and provides instruction in preparation administration of designated medications by non-licensed nursing personnel employed in licensed health care agencies. It also teaches the responsibilities associated with such administration. There will be two orientation sessions.

Bringing home the gold

Seniors Sam Fowler and Cassidy Shaver, along with sophomores Cross Allen and Karter Ford, took home the gold by 35 points or five questions over second place Callisburg High School from Gainesville. Sam took the individual State Championship by scoring 266 points, missing only two of the questions he attempted during the 30-minute timed test. Teammate Cassidy took the silver medal by getting the calculus problem correct and edging Callisburg’s Zach Morrow by one question, who took the bronze.

Pageant winner

Braylyn Rae Fry participated in the Little Miss Texas State pageant in Longview, under the direction of Gingerbread Productions on May 17. She won Mini Grand Supreme in the age 10 and up division along with various other awards. She is on her way to compete in the Nationals pageant on July 26 in Dallas.
 
Braylyn is the 12-year-old daughter of Brandon and Lynn Fry of Lone Star

Munn receives Leadership Award

Trevor Munn was recently honored with a leadership award from Southern Arkansas University.
 
Mr. Munn is a senior political science major from Hughes Springs, and was among students highlighted at SAU’s 19th Annual Leadership Recognition and Awards for the 2013-14 academic year. 
 
He received the following recognition and award, Homecoming Award and Phi Lambda Chi Outstanding Service Award.
